Scott Boras is a snake. I think we can all agree on that front but I honestly commend how he pulls off these insane contracts for guys that are so undeserving of that much of money. The recent culprit that fell for Boras' pitch was the St. Louis Cardinals who gave Mat Holiday 7 years for 120 million dollars. What?
While I can see why the Cardinals would do the deal for Holiday because it gives them the ultimate protection for first basemen Albert Pujols forcing teams to actually pitch to him this year. It also makes the Cardinals a threat at getting to and winning the World Series next year with the great starting pitching and the solid bullpen. In addition, they didn't want their fans to feel they wasted prospects for a half a year. So I can see why the General Manager John Mozeliak decided to pull the trigger but there is a big white elephant that is looming in Busch Stadium. Holiday was a genius for staying in the National League. I think he learned that the pitching of the American League is something that he didn't appear ready for in his short stint with the Oakland Athletics.
The best player in baseball right now Albert Pujols' contract is up in 2011 and right now, he makes less money that Holiday does right now. How does this makes sense to Mozeliak to pay Holiday all of this money? Does he believe that in 2011 that the Cardinals cannot afford Pujols in the upcoming year? I have no idea why he could make the choice to bring in Holiday. Pujols will look at that Holiday contract and basically saying I want that money plus a ton more than that.
Mozeliak should be enemy number one in St. Louis because even if they win the World Series this year, they will probably have to do so much maneuvering to keep Pujols in a Cards uniform. That other thing that could destroy the chances is if Tony LaRussa chooses to retire in the next two years because Pujols talks so highly of his manager and loves playing for them.
I shudder to think what kind of money Boras will want for Prince Fielder next year.
-Charlie.
