My 200 Post- Whats Going On in the Sports World and a Quick 08 Memory

First off I would like to apologize for not getting picks out for the New Years Eve football games I have been taken advantage of all of the sleep I can. So just a bunch of quick hitters which could of been articles. That is not to say they might not be later on this week but I want to make sure they get mention. No live blog either, I am going to the Marquette-Villanova game tomorrow afternoon. So I am going to just pick the games for the 1st and then have my full analysis on the rest of the games. Expect a weekly NBA talk and a couple college basketball things every week plus any other headlines that occur.

Iowa over South Carolina
Nebraska over Clemson
Georgia over Michigan State
USC over Penn State
Virgina Tech over Cincinnati

-Shanahan shown the door:I am shocked that Mike Shanahan got fired. I really do believe that Wade Phillips will be let go so the Cowboys can get Shanahan. Despite his poor recent playoff record, he has been a solid coach throughout the years.

-Angles sign Fuentes; Cubs trade Derosa: Both things made me very happy because Brian Fuentes was rumored to be the new Brewer closer and I hated the idea of it because of his shaky play throughout the years. What are the Cubs doing really? I mean Derosa is their Mr. Everything and to deal him makes no sense. Also they are rumored to bring in Milton Bradley who is overrated and a head-case.

-Reports Favre has a Bicep Tendon Tear: Granted I think this adds to the legend that is Brett Favre to play through an injury of that nature but to many Jets fans, it looked like a selfish thing to keep his record in tact.

Overall 2008 was one of the best years in sports and I am happy that I was a part of all of it. First off to see the New York Giants take down the evil empire that was the New England Patriots made the whole country happy and there was a sense that parity was back in the NFL. The NBA comes back with a vengeance with up and coming stars plus the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Lakers, life is good again in the NBA. In college basketball, getting to known Stephen Curry this March was something so special, willing his team to the Elite 8 and almost the Final Four. In MLB, to have the Brewers get to the playoffs for the first time in 26 years is a memory that I will always hold close to my heart and for them to have won the first game at Miller Park is so special. I will never take that summer of baseball back. Tiger Woods willing himself to win the US Open on one leg was nothing more than amazing, the best moment in 2008. Finishing a close second was the run Michael Phelps had throughout the Summer Games with him kicking the France National Relay team's ass when not expected and then all of his individual efforts.

Heres to a better 2009.

Defensive Grades and Final Thoughts of the Packer Season

Here we go with Part 2, you can read Part 1 now

Defense C- They were not good all year, at the end of the season I believe that a Tosa West offense could of had two touchdowns on them. Bob Sanders needs to be on his way out of Green Bay and now there are reports that every linebacker position will be up for grabs next year. Granted you still were without Cullen Jenkins, Nick Barnett, and Atari Bigby but they should of been better.

Aaron Kampman A- He had a great year at defensive end and may have not had the numbers that he has had in the past couple of years because he was the only player on the line that rushed the quarterback. He is a staple of our defense.

Mike Montgomery D+ Montgomery had a chance to step up and become a player after they release KGB, which he did not. He proved he is no better than a back-up this year.

Ryan Pickett B I thought Pickett had a modest year, there werent as many problems stopping the run as there were with the pass. I thought Pickett looked solid throughout the year, also stayed very healthy.

Johnny Jolly B Jolly alot like Pickett wasnt bad. I also think he can take over Pickett's spot in the near future as the number one and proving to be more of an impact than the first round pick Justin Harrell.

A.J. Hawk C Has A.J. Hawk coming closer to a bust? I mean he cannot cover the flats for shit and really can only make plays to stop the run plus also is very good tackling.

Brady Poppinga C Once again another linebacker who wasnt great against the pass, they let running backs catch passes out of the backfield and Poppinga I dont believe is a starter on this Green Bay team.

Nick Barnett/Brandon Chillar B-/C+ Barnett's impact in defending the pass was way more than anyone us ever thought but he really did have a quiet season before getting hurt. Chillar did a good job stepping up in Barnett's place.

Charles Woodson A He had a great year and earned a Pro Bowl spot for it. He is proving to be an ageless wonder as he hasnt been slowed down. He was a lockdown corner who was asked to play in some many different spots throughout the year.

Al Harris B+ Harris had a good year and still is the number one cornerback despite Woodson's year. Harris is still has some years behind him and is a lockdown corner.

Nick Collins A What a difference a year makes for Collins. He looked like the weakest link last year but now he is a Pro Bowler looking strong. Collins makes plays in the run/pass game.

Aaron Rouse C Rouse didnt have that great of a year and I expected big things from Rouse. I thought he could be a powerful combination with him and Bigby last year. Obviously I was mistaken.

Heres to next year.

The Knockout Punch to Favre Fans: Mangenius Leaves New York

Ok maybe the title is a bit harsh but is their some truth to it?

Mangini was ousted after having a two winning season and one poor season so the question is why was a guy once called Mangenius by the New York media, now looking for jobs?

One reason is they went 0-4 on the West Coast and they went 1-3 against the AFC West which was a bad division. That should not have happened with the players they had. The lost to Seattle was the cherry on top not even getting a touchdown in snowy conditions. Mangini also had many questionable play calls that led people to believe that him and Favre didnt get along that well.

Another reason is the play of Brett Favre in the month of December. Favre didnt have it in the final month of the season when they needed it the most. My buddy Steve whose a true Jets fan and was at the game on Sunday said there were fans throwing their Favre jerseys on the field on Sunday. He was booed at the beginning of the game and at the end of the game, that never happened at Lambeau.

They're needed to be a change at quarterback but if they would of rode with Kellen Clemens, their record might be the same. Thomas Jones was the leader rusher in the AFC but was overshadowed by Favre which should have never happened. The defense was good enough for Clemens to keep the record the same.

If I was the Jets, I would take a look at Steve Spagnulo of the New York Giants, not a bad idea to bring in a defensive minded coach in there. Bill Cowher is a name that's being thrown around but I really think he is still very loyal to the Steelers franchise but he does have a lot of ties to New York. Marty Schottenheimer is another old name being thrown into the mix.

-Charlie.

Dont Believe the Hype: Cleveland Browns Theme Song

Remember when everyone was on the Cleveland Browns bandwagon at the beginning of the year with all the free agent moves and the prospect of Derek Anderson being the next great quarterback in the NFL? Yeah about that, 4-12 and no touchdowns since November 17th.

This all meant that Romeo Crennel got the boot today on Black Monday and Phil Savage the General Manager was also give the heave-ho.

Crennel has not had a great career as a head coach with two seasons with ten or more losses and one decent season. He seems clueless when they would challenge calls and things of that nature. In addition, Crennel did not keep his players together when times got rough so there was a divide in the locker room. Granted, I think a couple years down the road he may get another chance but right now, Cleveland has a bunch of talent and there is no reason they shouldnt at least contend for a playoff spot. I would love to see Crennel be the defensive coordinator of the Packers next year, he is an excellent coordinator and the Packers definitely need a new look on defense. Although they would need to bring in a couple free agents to make up a 3-4 defense.

The Browns shoud look at Josh McDaniels of New England especially if they bring in Scott Pioli as their GM. I also think Eric Mangini wouldnt be a bad option for this team either. I thought it was insane to think Bill Cowher would join the Browns, the most hated rival of the Steelers. I think whoever the new coach is, they should have an open quarterback competition and the other one can be used as trade bait if their season is successful.

As for Savage, I disagree with the decision to get rid of him. Maybe I am just an outsider looking in but he has drafted well with guys like Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn (maybe not, but he did look impressive before injury) plus he has brought in some quaility free agents. There is a reason why Kansas City is thinking about bringing him in as a GM.

-Charlie.

When You're 0-16, You Usually Lose Your Job

Today was the inevitable for Rob Marinelli as the Detroit Lions fired the coach of the first 0-16 team.

This needed to happen because of the record of the Lions this season but in fairness to Marinelli, he had an awful squad around him. When you get a retired quarterback to play for you and then put him as the starter that very week, usually means your not successful at all. Kevin Smith and Calvin Johnson are the only true talents that the Lions really do have. Ernie Sims might be good but he needs some major work. Also they need an attitude adjustment, they made so many dumbass plays in the Packer game this past weekend. Other than that, they do not have another standout player so because of it, it was finally time for the Lions to start over.

The Lions need a massive overhaul of players to make this team into a winner which is never really has been. The Barry Sanders years featured playoff appearances but they were not considered Super Bowl Contenders during these years. The worst move they made so far is not look into going outside of their organization for a GM.

I think that either Josh McDainels, the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots or Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. Even the former coach of the New York Jets, Eric Mangini would not be a bad fit either. Whoever it is, they will need time to become a successful team.

Also if I am the Lions GM, I trade the number one pick to anyone who wants it and trade for as many draft picks as possible. Go in there thinking they are going to get ten draft picks at least and use them on things like the lines on both sides of the ball or the secondary for sure. Do not pick Sam Bradford if he comes out, if anything if they keep the pick take Andre Smith. Also I would experiment the opportunity to bring in Matt Cassel.

Packers Wrap-up and Overall Offensive Grades

A two part look at this years Green Bay Packers first an overall wrap-up on the season and then offensive grades. Then Part two will feature the defensive grades and any final thoughts.

Lets face it, the Packers had a disappointing season. Even with a new quarterback and a tougher schedule, it wasnt expected to be a 13-3 season but it was suspected to be another playoff year which didnt happen as the Pack went 6-10. They went lost eight games by four points or less which means there were only a couple games were the Packers got their asses kicked. Rodgers is still a young quarterback who I dont believe has the clutch ability as we all been used in the last seventeen years with Brett Favre but that comes with time of couse so it wasnt disappointing that this things kept happening. In addition, the Packers were bitten hard by the injury bug with Cullen Jenkins, Nick Barnett, and Mark Tauscher all done for the year in the middle of the season, also they didnt have a healthy Atari Bigby for most of the season. That is one big player in every part of your defense, you cannot expected them to this dominant defense when they have so many holes in the overall defense. A lot of people want to blame this losing season on Ted Thompson which is completely ludicrous because Thompson wasnt the doormat defense against Houston or the low kick in Chicago, no Thompson just made one move which wasnt awful because the quarterback they got rid of isnt in the playoffs either.

Overall Offense: B+ When you have an offense that threw for over 4000 yards, rushed for over 1000 yards, and had two receivers that achieved the 1000 yard mark, most of the time those teams are playoffs teams but if they arent, usually its a result of a pretty bad defense.

Aaron Rodgers: A- The only reason why Rodgers does not receive the full A was due to his lack of leadership in close games. That was the only real problem with Rodgers after dealing with all the Favre shit throughout the year better than most people probably would. I expect big things from Rodgers in the next couple of years.

Ryan Grant B- I didnt even realize that Grant had rushed for 1000 yards this season until last week. He wasnt the same impact player as last year and it could of had something to do with his holdout as well. Grant really didnt break any big plays, only really had one big game (versus Indianapolis).

Kory Hall C+ Hall really doesnt have much to talk about but sometimes the impact of how good the running back is relates to how good the fullback is. I would go wth Hall next year probably unless something comes along

Greg Jennings A- Jennings is considered by most in the NFL as a number one receiver. I would tend to agree but he needs to focused on catching the ball, he tends to drop too many for a number one receiver. The future is truly bright for Jennings and the Packers.

Donald Driver A He should be named Mr. Reliable, whenever a first down was needed Driver got it. He also never goes out of bounds always fights for the extra yard. I hope he comes back next year with the Pack because I couldnt see him in another uniform.

Donald Lee B- He had an alright year but it wasnt anything special. He needs to become more of a threat in the red zone but I think Jermichael Finley will push hard for his spot next season.

Chad Clifton C+ Clifton had his ups and downs all year, the beginning of the year featured him getting holding call every three plays but finished out strong. Clifton is at the twilight of his career and Thompson needs to draft a tackle or two in the draft this April.

Daryn Colledge C He didnt make an impact at all this year and got worked when he was moved to Right Tackle yesterday. I think its time to move on from Colledge as well either in the draft or Jason Sitton, their one year man from Central Florida

Scott Wells B+ Wells was one of the best on the line this season and is proving to be a great center in the NFL. They need to protect Rodgers a bit better next year but Wells is the leader of the line.

Jason Spitz A- Another strong part of the offensive line, he is our best young lineman out of the bunch. Dont be surprised if Spitz is a pro-bowler in a couple of years, he will end up being one of the best.

Mark Tauscher B You really cannot give Tauscher a grade because of his injury which many think will lead him back to Green Bay because his pay day will not be as large. He had a good year up until then and I think has a couple years left in the tank although tackle is a position I look at in the draft.

Defensive Part 2

Bowl Preview Week 2

Well here we go, this one will be work in progress all week, I will probably get it done the first couple games and keep working throughout the week.

Friday
Motor City Bowl: Florida Atlantic vs. Central Michigan (Detroit) Players to Watch: Rusty Smith quarterback for Florida Atlantic, he is the leader of the team and has put up some big numbers for his team this year, they have went 5-1 to get in the bowl. Dan LeFevour quarterback for Central Michigan, the MAC's version of Tim Tebow without the leadership, this guy is really good and will be a big time NFL player in a couple years. This game is a supposed shootout so maybe I will turn it on in the Fourth quarter but I really could care less about this, I will take the "home" team in this one. CMU 41-38

Saturday
Meineke Car Care Bowl: West Virgina vs. North Carolina (Charlotte) Players to Watch: Pat White quarterback for West Virgina, he is 3-0 as a starter in bowl games so he lives for these games and being his last game as a Mountaineer will be something special. Hakeem Nicks wide receiver for North Carolina, despite all of the different quarterbacks all year due to injury, Nicks has been their most consistent player all year and will be needed against a tough West Virgina secondary. The game is being played in Charlotte so the Tar Heels have some advantage but they will have their hands full with White so it will be a close game with the Mountaineers pulling it out. WVU 27-24

Champs Sports Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Florida State (Orlando) Players to Watch: John Clay running back for Wisconsin, sometimes bowl games are like crystal ball to foresee what next year will be about and if Clay has a big game against the FSU defense, the future could get even brighter. Christian Ponder quarterback for Florida State, he is the future of the Seminoles on offense and will need to have a big game against the Badgers. It seems whenever a fast team matches up with a Big 10 team it doesnt turn out pretty for the Big 10 school but I think the Badgers team speed matches up with the Noles somewhat although I cannot see Wisconsin having enough offense to beat Florida State. FSU 20-17

Emerlad Bowl: Miami vs. California (San Francisco) Players to Watch: Jacory Harris quarterback for Miami, alot like Clay, Harris could prove to be the future of Hurricane football if he can get it done for suspended Robert Marve. Harris is very quick and it will be interesting to see if the Golden Bears are able to respond. Jahvid Best, running back for California, no pun intended one of the best young backs in the NCAA and dont be surprised if Best is in the Heisman running next year to start the season out. This game I am pretty excited about because I feel both teams are relatively even and there is no glaring hole for either side. I think because of Best, the Golden Bears will control the clock and put this one away in the fourth. CAL 31-21

Sunday
Independence Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Louisiana Tech (Shreveport, LA) Players to Watch: Chandler Harnish quarterback for Northern Illinois, he didnt really start playing until conference play in October but he has been the catalyst for the Husky offense at the end of the year. He has done it with both his arm and feet. Daniel Porter running back for Louisiana Tech, when the Bulldogs went on a four game winning streak late in the season, it was Porter who got them there with over 100 yards in each of those games. Here's the deal, this is probably the worst bowl out of the thirty-four but with Tech having the "home" advantage and Northern Illinois has struggled of late while the Bulldogs havent. LATECH 27-10

Monday
Papajohns.com Bowl: NC State vs. Rutgers (Birmingham) Players to Watch: Russell Wilson quarterback for NC State, a redshirt freshman whose future is very bright as he has thrown only one interception all year and has been the leader in the four game winning streak to get them into the bowl. Mike Teel quarterback for Rutgers, he has been a monster during the Big East season throwing for six and seven touchdowns in two Big East games this year. I think he would be a great 3rd-5th round pick for any NFL team this upcoming draft. Both of these teams are red-hot going into the bowl season and led by great quarterbacks although I think Rutgers will be the stronger team going into it and will win a close game. RUT 21-20

Valero Alamo Bowl: 21. Missouri vs. 23. Northwestern (San Antonio) Players to Watch: Chase Daniel quarterback for Missouri, the last game of his career and its highly unlikely he will get drafted in the NFL being only 5'10 so I expect him to go all out and end his career with a bang. C.J. Bacher quarterback for Northwestern, he is a dual-threat out of the spread and despite high expectations for Tyrell Sutton, he has been the key for this great season for the Wildcats. Some consider this a mis-match but I think Mizzou defense allows games to stay close with their shotty play. If the Wildcats can slow down the Missouri offense, they can win this game. I think they will come up a bit short, expect alot of points. MIZZOU 42-38

Tuesday
Roady's Humantarian Bowl: Maryland vs. Nevada (Boise) Players to Watch: Chris Turner quarterback for Maryland, the Terps have had one of the biggest ups and downs seasons for all of the NCAA and Turner has been the strongest players on the team. Colin Kaepernick quarterback for Nevada, real underrated quarterback in college football he has thrown for almost 2500 and rushed for over 1100 that is unreal. This guy should be a threat to watch. The Terps are one of the most inconsistent team this year so it really will be a question of what team will show up, I will say the bad one. NEVADA 24-10

Texas Bowl: Western Michigan vs. Rice (Houston) Players to Watch: Tim Hiller quarterback for Western Michigan, Hiller has been a beast this year throwing for thirty-four touchdowns and over 3400 yards. He has a big play target in Jamarko Simmons whose also had a big year. Jarrett Dillard wide receiver for Rice, very underrated player has 19 touchdowns and over 1200 yards this year which is unheard of and will be playing on Sundays for a long time. This a "home" game for the Owls and there shouldnt be any defense in this game, just throw the ball around the whole fields, I will take the combination of Dillard and James Casey. RICE 45-41

Holiday Bowl: 13. Oklahoma State vs. 17. Oregon (San Diego) Players to Watch: Dez Bryant wide receiver for Oklahoma State, one of the best big play threats in college football and the Ducks defense will be challenge all game by Bryant. Jeremiah Masoli quarterback for Oregon, it looked bleak for the Ducks at the beginning of the year with many quarterbacks hit the injured reserve, they have found a pleasant surprise in Masoli. This bowl always seems to have classics and this one could be another one. The Ducks are going to need a couple defensive stops to keep up with the Cowboys run n' gun offense, I will that Oklahoma State pulling away in the fourth. OK STATE 38-28

NFL Picks Week 17- Saving the Best for Last

Here it is the last week of the regular season and there are some games that still matter for many teams.

St. Louis (2-13) at Atlanta (10-5)- First off congrats to my man Sepi whose stuck with the Falcons through the good and the bad, now they are in the playoffs and could possibly win the NFC South. They should have no problems dominating the Rams on Sunday to possibly seek into the two seed. Matt Ryan or Peyton Manning is my MVP this year. ATL 31-13

New England (10-5) at Buffalo (7-8)- Many are either rejoicing or crying because the Pats might miss the playoffs even if they win and a 11-5 is out and the Chargers if they win will be in at 8-8. As much as I hated New England last year, I love Jonathan Moxson er.... Matt Cassel's performance this year, its truly a Hollywood type story. The Pats win and who knows if they get in. NE 24-13

Kansas City (2-13) at Cincinnati (3-11-1)- It will be interesting to see if these two coaches survive Black Monday, I think Herm Edwards should because everyone has said the Chiefs are rebuilding but the Bengals, it might be time for a change. I will take the Chiefs because they have played harder all year. KC 17-13

Detroit (0-15) at Green Bay (5-10)- Scariest game ever. Many feel if the Packers lose to the Lions then Ted Thompson will probably be out or Mike McCarthy but with rumors saying that the Lions didnt practice on Christmas, I think their mindset will be on the cold not the game itself. The Packers will take out all their aggression. GB 38-20

Tennessee (13-2) at Indianapolis (11-4)- Well this would been a great game about three weeks ago but with both teams in the playoffs, this will be just a tune-up for the playoffs. Also appearances by Vince Young and Jim Sorgi, I will take the home team. IND 27-20

New York Giants (12-3) at Minnesota (9-6)- The Giants have nothing to play for as they have the top spot in the playoffs while the Vikings have everything to play for. The Vikings really are chokes but its hard to see them losing this game, then again Brad Childress is their coach. MIN 31-17

Carolina (11-4) at New Orleans (8-7)- The Panthers need this win to make sure they keep their bye and the NFC South teams havent lost at home all this year. I dont really see the Saints having a chance in this one. CAR 27-20

Cleveland (4-11) at Pittsburgh (11-4)- Well this game will be another pillow fight and an appearance by Charlie Batch for the Steelers. The Browns are lost and Romeo Crennel is out of a job come Monday as they will lose this one too. PIT 17-6

Oakland (4-11) at Tampa Bay (9-6)- The Gruden Bowl and the Buccaneers need to win to ensure that they might have a spot in the playoffs. Granted, the Raiders are improving week by week but I cant see them playing spoiler in this one. TB 28-16

Chicago (9-6) at Houston (7-8)- To keep the Bears floating they need this win on Sunday but they are just barely getting victories lately see the block FG from last Monday and I really think the Texans will want to play spoiler in this battle. HOU 24-21

Washington (8-7) at San Francisco (6-9)- The Redskins have went down faster than most toilets and have their coach crying in his shower after every Sunday like Tobias Funke. The 49ers are on the rise and will be able to finish an alright year. SF 23-17

Jacksonville (5-10) at Baltimore (10-5)- Well the Ravens should be able to get in the playoffs with a home against a Jaguar team whose coach should be fired after the most disappointing season. The Ravens will be inspired to get this one done. BALT 20-10

Miami (10-5) at New York Jets (9-6)- Interesting Brett Favre has struggled in the last four weeks with the numbers of one touchdown and six interceptions. Brett its time to hang it up, we all want you too. Thomas Jones needs to be the first option on Sunday but I think the Phins pull it out barely. MIA 34-31

Dallas (9-6) at Philadelphia (8-6-1)- Both teams need this win and the Cowboys are in if they win. Lets all remember Tony Romo's clutch ability, oh wait he doesnt have any. Terrell Owens may shit a full brick if they lose especially to Donovan McNabb and Philadelphia. Romo throws an INT while driving to lose this one for them. PHI 17-14

Seattle (4-11) at Arizona (8-7)- I just hope that the Cardinals do not lose so they are another 8-8 team in the playoffs. I think the Seahawks will want to win for the Frosty Walrus' last game but I dont foresee it happening. ARI 31-20

Denver (8-7) at San Diego (7-8)- The Broncos have had the win and get in scenario for the last three weeks and have failed to do it while the Chargers have crept up on them. They look like the stronger team and I think San Diego runs away with it, getting Norv Turner to the playoffs, gross. SD 35-24

Enjoy the last weekend.

-Charlie.

Kobe and the Lakers Gets It Done

Last night, the rematch of the NBA Finals was set. Lakers v. Celtics with the Celts having a 19 game winning streak on the line and that came to end as Los Angeles defeated Boston 92-83.

People are not convinced with the Lakers and consider the West more wide-open than the East which I can agree with but I still think the Lakers are much stronger than the rest of the West. The only reason why its more open is because there are more than two teams that can challenge for the championship. I think Los Angeles showed last night that they can play with whoever comes out of the East come June. The big thing that impressed me is the Lakers defense last night, Boston was frustrated all game long and really had no answer for Los Angeles stranglehold. People had said that the Celtics drain teams come the Fourth quarter but that wasnt the case at all last night as Kobe and Pau Gasol showed no letting up. That also had to do with the strength of their bench which no team in the West can challenge.

I will also take this time to address the fact that Kobe showed once again how strong he is in the last two minutes and it did not matter who was on him, he took charge late. But, this might make my friend Brett fall out of his chair, the gap between whose the best player in the NBA has closed. Lebron James is playing on another planet this year and James looks so much stronger than the rest of the league right now so the Bryant-James debate may be ending soon especially if James wins a championship this year.

"This is a Joke Right?"- Yanks land Teixeria

You heard it right, the Yankees land the biggest bat in the free agent market. Today, Mark Teixeria signs for 8 years 180 million today to play in the Bronx with the Yankees

People can be upset that how much money the Yankees are throwing around this winter but they needed to do this. They attempted the youth movement with Phillip Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Kei Iwaga, and Melky Cabrera, this was the reason why they didnt trade for Johan Santana. After that led them to a third place finish in the AL East this year, Yankee brass knew that moves had to be made to solve their World Series drought and their playoff drought.

After the Yanks landed Sabathia, and Burnett I thought no way they are going to get Teixeria especially with the strong push the Red Sox were making throughout the entire free agent period. Also the Washington Nationals wanted him to be the Braun of their franchise, which in my opinion is a pretty cool thing when a team wants that out of you. The Yankees were not even being discussed as in the Teixeria sweepstakes. So big props to Brian Cashman and anyone else involved to get the deal done.

Although I have said this in every article I have wrote about the Yankees' transactions all winter if they do not win a World Series then its a disappointment. No really it is because when you throw around this much money you need to win something, not just an AL East title, and not even an AL Crown will do.

If they bring in Manny Ramirez, I told my dad my head probably will explode.

-Charlie.

Braun to Play in World Baseball Classic

Some programming notes, I dont know if there will be many articles up here until Friday but then again who knows, if there is news and I have a computer, I will give you articles. Dont think I am slowing down though, just a busy time of year. Also I promise something special for January 1st. Now on to the article

Some fans hate when their guys play in tournaments like the World Baseball Classic but personally I love that Ryan Braun has agreed to play in the tournament. First off this is an excellent public relations move for Braun because he is able to gain exposure which at times is very hard to do it in the greater Midwest. Therefore he becomes a superstar not playing in New York or Los Angelas to people

People are worried that this will relate into a slow start to begin the season and granted I am concerned although not that worried with Braun's natural talent. In addition, Braun had a shitty start last year and he turned out alright by the end of the year.

As an overall fan, this is a great choice by the US National team, he is a clutch hitter and provides the US team with all-around skills. I also wouldnt be shocked if he does a lot of DHing during the games due to other good players out in Left Field.

Bowl Preview Week 1

We will do three of these during the College Football bowl season which is one of my favorite times of the year. I hope in all of the previews to give you a player to watch for each team and a well throughout predictions.

Eagles Bank Bowl Wake Forest vs. Navy- Players to watch: Riley Skinner quarterback for Wake, I think he is the X factor of this battle and if he doesnt throw interceptions, Wake will be in this game. The Navy Defense, they havent allowed a touchdown since the loss to Notre Dame, they have made plays all season so if they can disrupt Skinner it could be a long game. This game is a rematch from earlier this season where the Naval Academy just owned the Demon Deacons when they were ranked. The weather will not be great in this one so that played to the Midshipmen advantage with a strong running game. Navy will get it done again and I dont think Wake Forest will play them again for a long time. NAVY 21-10

New Mexico Bowl (Albuquerque, New Mexico) Colorado State vs. Fresno State- Players to watch: Gartell Johnson, running back for Colorado State, he has rushed for over 80 yards plus in the last six games and I believe will have more of an impact on the game than Billy Farris. He needs a big game for the Rams. Tom Brandstater, quarterback for Fresno State, they need a big effort out of him to win the game. He has been poor of late and the Bulldogs have struggled. When its all said and done, the Bulldogs are the better team in this one because the Rams have shown weakness on the defense end giving up big points to California and BYU. FRESNO 38-17

Magicjack St. Petersburg Bowl (St. Petersburg) Memphis vs. South Florida- Players to watch: Curtis Steele, running back for Memphis, he is their go-to guy in big situations so he will need to have a big day on the ground for the Tigers to be in it. Matt Grothe, quarterback for South Florida he had a big year last year and this year sort of fell off the radar, still a dual threat. This game is 10 minutes away from South Florida campus, usually when that happens the other team suffers. USF 35-14

I couldnt get to computer before the BYU-Arizona, I would of went with the Wildcats (who won 31-21) because they had been on a roll as late. Also the Cougars haven't been that impressed throughout the last couple of weeks especially on the defense end of the ball. They had no answer for Willie Tuitama.

New Orleans Bowl (New Orleans) Troy vs. Southern Miss-Players to watch: DuJuan Harris running back for Troy, he has been the best player on the field for the Trojans this year on the offense end, he will need a big game tonight. DeAndre Brown, wide receiver for Southern Miss, he has been the home-run threat for the Eagles this year and if he has big game, usually results in a big game for Southern Miss. This should be an interesting game with a very hot Southern Miss team and a good Troy team, I will take the team who seems to be peaking at the right time. SOMISS 27-17

San Diego Credit Poinsettia Bowl (San Diego) 9. Boise State vs. 11. TCU- Players to watch: Kellen Moore quarterback for Boise State, it will be interesting to see how the freshman handles the tough Horned Frog defense, if he struggles it could be a long day for the Broncos. TCU Defense this is one of the best defenses in the country, held some of the best offenses to some of their lowest totals all year. This is one of the best games before January 1st and it will be a struggle to see if the Broncos offense topples the Horned Frog defense, I can see Moore getting rattled easily by TCU. TCU 16-13

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl (Honolulu) Hawaii vs. Notre Dame- Players to watch: Greg Alexander quarterback for Hawaii, he didnt play in the beginning of the year but has come on strong in the last couple of weeks, he had 315 and 275 in his last two games. Jimmy Clausen quarterback for Notre Dame, I have been high on Clausen all year and I think he just needs to find his accuracy to become a great quarterback, he has the skills and the receivers to do it. This should be a challenge for the Fighting Irish as Hawaii defends their island very well. I will take the Irish but it will be close game, dont be surprised if they try to roast Charlie Weis at halftime for dinner. ND 24-20

Happy Bowl Week.

College Basketball Games of the Weekend

Well I have to work all day Saturday so I wont have the pleasure of enjoying some of these games but you will so I figure I should preview College Basketball for the weekend.

2. Connecticut-vs. 7. Gonzaga- (played in Seattle)- Well the fans in Seattle will get a taste of great basketball with the two best big men combos in the nation. I think the Huskies have the bigger big men in Hasheem Thabeet and Jeff Adrian but their guards are nowhere near Gonzaga's. Close and big win for the Zags. ZAGS 71-69

3. Pittsburgh-at Florida State- Scary matchup for the Panthers as they play in the always tough Tallahassee. Granted, Pitt is one of the most experienced bunch but they can easily get upset on Sunday. I think they will pull it out but trust me it will be close. PITT 69-67

5. Texas-vs. 22. Michigan State- Talk about going through the Big Ten gauntlet, thats what the Longhorns are doing lately. They need to find some offense inside and I think that could hurt them playing the Spartans who just got back Goran Suton. It should be a great match up between A.J. Abrams and Raymar Morgon, I will take Texas in a tight battle going down to the wire. TEX 64-62

6. Duke-vs 7. Xavier (played in East Rutherford, New Jersey)- Remember when JJ Redick lit up Texas in Jersey a couple years ago? I dont know if the Musketeers can hang with the Dukies, granted they beat Memphis but there are no where near as good as Duke. The Blue Devils need to keep hitting their threes though or else it will be closer game than expected. DUKE 77-72

9. Louisville-vs.Minnesota (played in Glendale, Arizona)- This game will prove if the Golden Gophers are for real. They really have only played Virgina and one road game. I think this game will be very close with the Cards on short rest, the question is if the Gophers have anyone to stop Earl Clark? LOUIS 70-65

11. Syracuse-at 21. Memphis- The Cuse got robbed on a fluke shot on Tuesday so I know they will be inspired to win but... They are without Eric Devendorf until he does 40 hours of community service. I think they could still pull it out because Johnnie Flynn will be able to contain Tyreke Evans whose a better version of Dominic James in terms of hogging the ball. CUSE 82-80

17. Arizona State-vs. Brigham Young (played in Glendale, Arizona)- What a surprise BYU pretty good at basketball too and they are going to need a hell of an effort against the Sun Devils and James Harden on Saturday. They haven't played anyone yet and they will receive a rude awaking. ASU 79-67

18. Purdue-vs. 20. Davidson- What a three-point barrage this one will be. A great match up featuring two of the best players in college basketball with Stephan Curry and Robbie Hummel. I think Curry will be able to keep his team in the game but the home crowd plus the better inside game will lead the Boilermakers to victory. PUR 78-71

Indiana Keeps Rolling.... Not Blunts, Just a Tranished Program

Where have you gone Bobby Knight?

Coach Knight was a great disciplinarian but that was something Kelvin Sampson knew nothing about. Already known about his program is the multiple illegal recruiting allegations during his Hoosier coaching days but now former Indiana Guard, now Los Angeles Clipper Eric Gordon reveled "Drug use caused a rift in our team last year."

Gordon even went further to saying that he didnt feel comfortable around the team and usually stayed at a family friend's house in Bloomington instead during team gatherings. Also Sampson was well aware that this was going on. It makes me sick that a coach nonetheless was likely protecting players because they were good, no other real reason. It also bothers me he is an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, my personal wish is he never coaches again.

My big question is what were the drugs? I mean in some schools, they are well-known for marijuana, ask University of Colorado maybe. So its not uncommon to see weed on most major campuses but I wonder if its worse than that. Something maybe like cocaine granted that would be the extreme level. So I dont want to go to far and its very possible that Gordon knew he had a future and didnt want to jeopardize that with a bunch of potheads. If thats the case, then good for Gordon and I am glad he stood up against an awful coach.

Andy Kennedy Loves the Middle East

Ole Miss head basketball coach Andy Kennedy was charged with a first degree misdemeanor as he allegedly punched a cab driver. Not only that but he also called him "Bin Laden" and "Saddam Hussian" in drunken anger. He will be on the sidelines coaching tonight against Louisville in a big game in Cincinnati.

In my opinion, if a ounce of this turns out to be true he deserves to be fired. First off, why is he out drinking the night before a game. The 24 hour rule should apply to coaches too, not just players and I could understand going out after the game because Kennedy has a bunch of friends in Cincinnati due to being an ex-assistant for Bobby Huggins. Second of all, why the need to punch the cab driver? I am sure the man was just doing his job which Kennedy disagreed with supposedly. Finally in anything like this, racial slurs should not be tolerated. Honestly, if he had done it to any other race there would be an absolute uproar against this act, his job probably lost and sure as hell not coaching tonight. The Middle East really does not have a NAACP or anything to that nature so you dont hear an immediate response.

Once again, I think the Rebels should be ashamed of themselves if they let Kennedy coach any more games past tonight. Due to the circumstances, this would really rattle a team if their coach
was not there for the game against a ranked opponent. Although, I think it would be wise for Ole Miss to suspended until further notice after this game.

NFL Picks Week 16: Showdown Sunday

Probably one of the best football weekends in late December in the last ten years. So much is on the line and so many key games.

Indianapolis (10-4) at Jacksonville (5-9)- Not a great game for a Thursday night affair. Before starting, I have more respect for Cris Collinsworth after listening to him on the BS Report, granted still an idiot in Madden. The Colts need this one to secure the fifth seed in the playoffs, I dont see Peyton and the boys letting up in this one. IND 31-13

Baltimore (9-5) at Dallas (9-5)- The Cowboys being the media whores that they always have been, remain in the media over this whole Romo-Whitten-TO thing blah blah. This game will be a defensive battle and I think even though I have criticized his fourth quarter play. Tony Romo is the reason they win this game. DAL 17-13

Cincinnati (2-11-1) at Cleveland (4-10)- Wow quite the rivalry match up in this one. These teams always seem to put up a ton of points against each other and since Ken Dorsey is the Browns QB, two straight wins for the Bengals. CIN 28-14

San Francisco (5-9) at St. Louis (2-12)- Another barn burner in the NFC West. The Niners are much better than the Rams are, not too much else to be said. Lets hope for a fight. SF 31-17

New Orleans (7-7) at Detroit (0-14)- The Lions may have the toughest schedule and please win this game, I have a bad feeling if they are winless going into to Lambeau next weekend. Too bad, they wont as Drew Bress has a field day. NO 38-20

Pittsburgh (11-3) at Tennessee (12-2)- I picked the Texans in an upset last weekend and I hate to do it to the city of Nashville but it happens again. Also the Steelers have been in prime time every damn week and finally when they have a game worth it, they play at noon. Unreal. PITT 16-13

Miami (9-5) at Kansas City (2-12)- Carl Peterson stepped down as Chiefs GM/President, pretty classy guy and I hope he lands somewhere else. I think Detroit would be lucky to have him. On to this game, honestly this one in years past the Phins would completely collapse due to the cold conditions. I think that Miami will pull it out because of their defense. MIA 21-6

Arizona (8-6) at New England (9-5)- The Cardinals looked awful last weekend against the Vikings and now they have to make a trek to Boston where the Pats are in desperate need of a win, shouldnt be pretty. NE 27-10

San Diego (6-8) at Tampa Bay (9-5)- Seriously will someone fire Norv Turner already or A.J. Smith? Both should be looking for work after this debacle of a season. They wont come close to the Bucs this weekend as they are in need of a win. TB 24-13

Houston (7-7) at Oakland (3-11)- The Texans have been on a complete and utter roll lately led by their two Pro Bowlers Andre Johnson and Mario Williams. I see no reason why they wont continue against the hapless Oakland Raiders. HOU 34-20

Buffalo (6-8) at Denver (8-6)- The Broncos looked poor against the Panthers last weekend but good news they are probably dealing with J.P. Losman who single handily lost the Bills the game last weekend. DEN 23-7

New York Jets (9-5) at Seattle (3-11)- Once again, Brett Favre gave the "aw shucks I am unsure about next season, I am just worried about the playoffs." The Jets are 0-3 on the West Coast this year and I believe it continues on Sunday. SEA 24-21

Atlanta (9-5) at Minnesota (9-5)- The Vikings have been playing very well lately and I believe if they win, the NFC North is theirs. Too bad, they will expose how much they miss Pat Williams when Michael Turner runs all over them. ATL 31-28

Philadelphia (8-5-1) at Washington (8-6)- Jim Zorn has taken more shots at himself than most MMA fighters, he sounds like a whiny bitch if you want my opinion on it. The Eagles are one of the hottest teams in football and that tie is really gunna come back to bite them in the ass. PHI 34-20

Carolina (11-3) at New York Giants (11-3)- Huge game deserving of the Sunday Night billing. While the Giants have looked helpless on offense the last two weekends and the Panthers have shown how great the combination of Johnathon Stewart and DeAngleo Williams. This game should go down to whoever has the ball last and I think the Giants will slip by. NYG 35-31

Green Bay (5-9) at Chicago (8-6)- The Packers have lost five straight games and times really cannot be worse. I will give my evaluation at the end of the season and Bears probably will come out ahead in this one but I cant pick a Chicago team to win, it just not in my blood. GB 20-17

If you live in Milwaukee, enjoy shoveling.

Gene Chizik? Yeah That Makes Sense.

So I am Auburn's Athletic Director Jay Jacobs, I ran out Tommy Tuberville who averages 8.5 wins a year in 10 years at Aubrn and I go with Gene Chizik whose won 5 games in two years!

Chizik is the classic definition of a great coordinator (won a national championship with Texas and had an unbeaten year with Auburn) but he is not a good coach. I bet the fans of Iowa State are thanking the Tigers for getting this guy away from the program. How on earth could you hire this guy over Brady Hoke, or Turner Gill who seem like the wiser choices.

Granted, this was a job that no big name wanted because he would have to compete in-state with Nick Saban and the SEC has recently been a firing range if you have one bad season- Hard to believe people are pissed about Les Miles after winning a National Championship last year! But still, these two MAC guys would have took this job any day of the week.

Now Auburn alum Charles Barkley thinks its all about race because Turner Gill is an African-American. I really hate when race is brought into the whole mix but you really do have to wonder why Gill wasnt the obvious choice for the job. He rebuilt a non-existent Buffalo program, enough said.

I dont if its about race, its just whoever the boosters want.

-Charlie.

The Celtics are Pretty Good (Dont Forget About the Cavs/Lakers)

How good is the top half of the NBA?

Answer: Really freakin' good. The Celtics have won 15th straight games now posting a record of 23-2, while the Cavaliers are 20-4, and the Lakers are 21-3. Are you kidding me? These three teams look a couple times better than the rest of the NBA.

The Celtics seem like they cannot lose whenever they get down, they just drain teams in the fourth quarter. The reason is because they have so much depth whether it is Leon Powe, Glenn "Big Baby" Davis, or even Rajon Rondo whose coming into his own this season and so far is playing like an All-Star. He is leading this veteran team and when he needs to score, he delivers like he did against the Jazz last night. I wouldnt be shocked if they took down the Bulls record because I dont think we have seen a team as good as this one in a long time.

The Cavaliers should not be overlooked. As much as I dislike him, Mo Williams seems to be the piece of the puzzle that was missing for the Cavs to be a successful team and of course, he has bought into dishing the ball because its a lot easier to pass to Lebron James instead of Michael Redd. James is also playing like the MVP so far because he is doing everything to ensure his team is winning. I really believe the Cavs need a center to combat KG in the playoffs because "Big Z" and Ben Wallace are not enough, both are old and losing value.

Dont forget about the team out West. The Los Angeles Lakers look very good as well. Not only, do they have Killa Kobe Bryant but they also have the best 1-2 inside game with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. If this team stays heathly, the Finals has to be a crash course for Lakers-Celtics round II, also another part is Trevor Azria whose playing out of his mind these days.

-Charlie.

Murray Out For BCS Championship

Sorry guys about the lack of posting recently, there is this thing called finals. So I am giving you guys three posts until Thursday, I hope all can wait that long....

The Oklahoma Sooners suffered a big lost to their team as DeMarco Murray is out of the BCS Championship with a ruptured hamstring. This changes everything in game plans for both Florida and Oklahoma. Murray was a guy who not only could break a huge run but could also catch passes out of the backfield.

I remember seeing the injury against Missouri a couple weeks ago and I said "No Murray, no national championship." Of course they still have a chance to win, but it is going to take a Heisman effort by Sam Bradford. He will be keyed on even more than expected and will have to make things happen the entire game. Chris Brown, the back up is a good player but he doesnt make up the speed that Murray has.

Also I hope Murray gets better, this kid has a future although he seems to be bitten by the injury bug.

Bradford Reels In The Heisman

Saturday night in New York, there were arguably the three best players in college football and it was decided that Sam Bradford, quarterback was the best player in the nation for 2008.

Before I get started, I think that if Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow won instead it would of been just as good. All of these guys were deserving of the Heisman. If you look at pure statistics, then Bradford is your Heisman which I am assuming many voters looked at when they were voting. Also, he lit up scoreboards brighter than Clark Griswald's Christmas display. Bradford can just chuck the ball all over the field, had 50 touchdowns and 9 of them were over fifty yards. I wouldnt say that Bradford was clutch more so feared. Reason I say that is because when you watched Oklahoma during the end of the season, everyone believed that Bradford would match them down the field for what looked to be an easy touchdown. Bradford never made any mistakes and really did catch some bad breaks in the lost to Texas.

Alot of people were upset Graham Harrell was not in attendance with these three guys but in my opinion, it was the right choice. The reason being is he "crapped the bed" against Oklahoma on the big stage on the road. He was comfortable against Texas because he had the home-field advantage but in the opinion of voters, that showed he couldnt cut it outside of Lubbock. In addition, Bradford had a monster game to overshadow Harrell throughout the game.

Now we have a battle of two Heisman quarterbacks Sam Bradford vs. Tim Tebow. This is the first championship game in a couple years I am excited for. It will be interesting to see if Bradford gets the same protection against a tough Florida defense and if he is able to cut it against SEC defense.

Cheeks Gets the Boot

Another coach got in the NBA got fired and this time I feel its well-deserving as the Philadelphia 76ers ousted Maurice Cheeks after a 9-14 start.

The Sixers were expected to be a top notch team in the East with Andre Igoudala, Elton Brand, and Andre Miller but have failed to do so in the first twenty some games. Cheeks record in Phillie has not been the best of records so it makes sense that the Sixers see this as a great time for a new head coach.

Another reason why this makes sense is because the gap between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers versus everyone else in the East is widening by the day. The Sixers have all the tools to contend in the East but if they dont improve their record, they will have to face one of these teams in the playoffs or not even get there. That would make the Elton Brand contract seem obsolete.

Final thoughts on this is that with the Phillies winning the World Series, the city is craving to win and they are a "basketball-first town" They want to get back to the days of Dr. J or even sooner, back to being competitive with Allen Iverson. A change needed to be made.

-Charlie.

Weekend College Basketball Preview

Well there are some games on ESPN this weekend and they arent awful, just sort of typical non-conference games so I will give you my thoughts on each that are important and one Eric Devendorf.

Syracuse plays Long Beach State this weekend but that really doesnt matter, what does is how much of an idiot Eric Devendorf is. If you didnt hear, he hit a female student and now the Judaical board wants him suspended from the basketball team. I dont know all the facts but if he did do that, then the suspension is justified, this would be a huge lost for the Orange is it were to occur.

4. Gonzaga-at Arizona- The Zags love taking their show on the road, I felt they would have trouble with the Cougars which they prove me wrong. This is the "Owen Miller Bowl" and they have two defeats by one point. The Zags pull away at the very end. ZAGS 82-77

5. Oklahoma plays Utah who they should destroy, the only real reason to watch this is to see Blake Griffin just throw down a sick amount dunks.

8. Tennessee-at Temple- This game will probably be a blowout but the only reason I am writing something about this is because the Owls best player is named Dante Christmas, just awesome. Before you know it they will make him change his name to Holidays. TENN 81-63

9. Xavier-at Cincinnati- This game I think has the best chance to be an uspet. A great rivalry game where the Bearcats are slowly becoming a good basketball team, this would be a huge win for their program but I think they fall short to the X. XAV 71-65

15. Memphis-at 19. Georgetown- The Tigers proved their worth last year when they destroyed the Hoyas but I dont think it will go that route this year. You have two very young teams so this will be a great barometer to see how good both of those teams are, I will take the home team. GT 65-60

21. Ohio State-vs. Butler- The Bulldogs are always a fiesty team and they did beat Northwestern earlier on this year so the Buckeyes should be on upset alert this weekend. I think the Buckeyes should win with B.J. Mullins and this inside game. OSU 68-59

Conference season is only three weeks away.

Cowgirls Need to Hug It Out

Once again we have drama in Dallas.

There have been rumblings that the locker room in Dallas is completely divided where in one corner you have Terrell Owens (surprise, surprise) with his defensive bros by the way from my football knowledge, I think the defensive players have no right to stick their noses in this situation. This is between the offense, no players should say shit about these developments and finally Tony Romo-Jason Whitten in the other corner. Now the media is making a big deal out of this because well, its the Cowboys. If they dont win on Sunday, heads will roll let me tell you.

Romo-Whitten win this one because Romo is the quarterback he is finding whoever is open whether that is Whitten, Patrick Crayton, Roy Williams, Miles Austin, or TO. He shouldnt feel obligied to throw the ball to Owens because he damn well says so.

Funny isnt it, how TO is trying to sabotage another quarterback because things are not going well for Owens. Lets see you have Jeff Gracia, Donovan McNabb, and now you have Tony Romo. This is nothing new for Owens, he is a bigger media whore than Romo which trust me is hard to do.

This isnt the last we've heard of this catfight.

-Charlie.

Yankees Could Care Less About a Recession

The Yankees have landed another big fish in the Free Agent market this time its A.J. Burnett for a whooping 5 years 82.5 million but in my opinion, this will be a decision they will regret for years to come.

Yes I know, Burnett has been a great number two under Roy Halladay. And yes I know, he dominates the AL East powers like New York and Boston. He has great numbers last year as he had 231 strikeouts and enjoyed winning 18 games also he pitched the most innings in his career.

Whats funny about all of this is that he put up his previous best numbers in his contract year, hmm would you look at that. Sounds like a guy I know whose played for the Brewers for 10 years. In his first two years in Toronto, he only started 25 and 21 games in those two years in between contracts. Also after a good 2002 year, he only made 24 starts in two years until would you look at that his contract came up. He is known for his elbow problems and I had no idea why so many teams had a hard on for him. The stats dont lie brother, he only plays when he needs to.

Yes, we can look at this and say holy shit, will the Yankees be stopped? I mean Sabathia, Wang, Burnett is right up there with the Boston Red Sox with top pitching staffs and if Andy Pettitte doesnt come back, they add Ben Sheets as their fourth starter. Unreal.

But once again, you gotta prove it on the field

NFL Picks Week 15 Where We Dont Sell Senate Seats

Here we go as the season winds down there are some pretty critical games starting with this evening's affair...

New Orleans (7-6) at Chicago (7-6)- The Saints need this one to stay alive in the playoff race, if they lose, they can consider themselves out. The Bears just need to keep pace with the Vikings who can clinch this weekend and if they win, they likely knock the Packers out of the playoffs. I will take New Orleans in a selfish pick. NO 28-24

Tampa Bay (9-4) at Atlanta (8-5)- I wouldnt say at all that Atlanta would be out of if they lose but it will complicate things. The Falcons were very close against the Saints last weekend and I think being at home will assist them in a victory. ATL 34-31

Washington (8-5) at Cincinnati (1-11-1)- The Redskins are lucky that they can rebound with this one despite Clinton Portis' recent anger, I think Jim Zorn would be smart to not play him once again because this one will not even be close. WASH 35-3

Detroit (0-13) at Indianapolis (9-4)- The Colts have been blessed with the two worst teams in football these last two weekends so I dont see any reason why this game will be even close. IND 42-6

San Diego (5-8) at Kansas City (2-11)- Not quite where the Chargers saw themselves this season as they head into Arrowhead in a game which will probably feature some bad weather. Thats really the only hurdle for the Chargers in this one. SD 27-23

Seattle (2-11) at St. Louis (2-11)- "The Who Can Get the Higher Draft Pick Bowl" God this will be ugly, I wouldnt blame the city of St. Louis for not showing up to this one. STL 12-9

San Francisco (5-8) at Miami (8-5)- The Dolphins are still alive for the playoffs and get fortunate to face the Niners at home this week. Granted, the Niners broke the streak of not winning on the east coast, I still have a tough time seeing them beat the Phins. MIA 23-13

New York Jets (8-5) at Buffalo (6-7)- If Trent Edwards was playing in this game I migh have went with the Bills because we all remember how poor Brett Favre played in the bitter cold. But there really is no reason why the Jets shouldnt beat the hapless Bills. NYJ 20-10

Tennessee (12-1) at Houston (6-7)- The Oiler Bowl and last year we saw Vince Young stepped up big time to get a win for the Titans, this year er..... Well the Texas have been hot of late and I will take them in an upset. HOU 28-21

Green Bay (5-8) at Jacksonville (4-9)- This an absolute must-win for the Packers with the slimmest playoff chances and they should win this game. My only hope is to see one three and out by the Packers but I am guessing that's wishful thinking. GB 38-31

Minnesota (8-5) at Arizona (8-5)- Lets all take time to remember what happened the last time the Vikings went to Arizona... NO NO NO!!! Well heres hoping that the Vikings do the exact same thing. ARI 18-17

Denver (9-5) at Carolina (10-3)- Good matchup which I hope we all get instead of the damn Steelers on CBS this weekend. The Broncos should keep it close for awhile but the Panthers running attack will be too much for the Broncos. CAR 28-20

Pittsburgh (10-3) at Baltimore (9-4)- This actually isnt an awful game with the rivalry behind it but dont expect a lot of scoring. The Ravens need this one in hopes of a AFC North crown and to keep pace in the playoffs. I will take Pittsburgh defense will destroy the though. PITT 14-3

New England (8-5) at Oakland (3-10)- The Patriots head west again to play another sister of the poor. This time they wont have to worry about the "Tuck Rule" to win them a game. NE 21-0

New York Giants (11-2) at Dallas (8-5)- Uh Oh, TO has been complaining about Tony Romo.... We all have seen this story too many times to know that its not happyland in Dallas. The Giants now have the distractions out of the way and will land a knockout punch to the Cowboys. NYG 34-17

Cleveland (4-9) at Philadelphia (7-5-1)- I hope that Cleveland has teached every TV executive why we dont buy into pre-season hype. The Browns have played real well on Monday though this year. Dont expect that in this one. PHI 28-13

Mets Problems Solved?

Late last night a deal went down that sent dominant closer JJ Putz from the Mariners to the Mets in a 12 player 3 team deal which gave Seattle oodles of young talent to build off of, the Indians really didnt get much, and the Mets solved their other problem, middle relief.

I can honestly say that the Mets are my early favorite to come out of the NL and especially if they can add another starter to their rotation. I really think thats the only thing that missing now because they have bought all the parts to make a World Series team. Think about a night like this one.... Johan Santana starts the game goes seven innings then gives the ball to Putz, then finally K-Rod finishes them off. That is one of the scariest baseball thoughts know to man.

Putz obviously will not be the closer but he is an almost more important role as the guy to bridge the gap to K-Rod, occasionally he gets a shot at save if K-Rod has been pitching too much. I think you will Putz have much success in New York being the 8th inning guy.

Something tells me that the Mets are not stopping here.

Inside the NBA

I might try to do this during the mid-week as the NBA season begins to heat up....

Wolves fire Whitman- The "Matt Millen of the NBA" also known as Kevin McHale decides a guy who has a still a very young team needs to go and now he takes control of the team. I am sure the fans are pleased with the guy who traded away Kevin Garnett so his former team could get a ring. I hope that jackass is fired after this season as well. Also this continues my analogy on how NBA and the NHL in terms of coaching is slowly becoming the same.

Memphis, Washington, New Orleans Make a Deal- Wizards get defensive specialist Mike James which they need but does it really matter, they are getting comfortable in the cellar. They also got Jarvis Critteniton who should of stayed at Georgia Tech for a couple more years but it helps to have more guards. I wouldnt be shocked to see Caron Butler head out either if the deal was sweet enough. New Orleans receives Antonio Dainels whose a good three-point shooter and gives Chris Paul a solid back-up. But really nothing major to report on.

Suns and Bobcats Also Make a Deal- The Suns got Jason Richardson from the Bobcats whose one of the most excited players in basketball but the bigger question is how does this help Shaq? You get a run and gun player whose going to be stuck in a semi-half court offense, really doesnt make too much sense. The Bobcats get Raja Bell and Borias Diaw, they get a decent player in Diaw and Bell is at the twilight of his career although he still is a good defensive player.

Speaking of Charlotte... DWade Over Oakfor

Also The Lebron Dunk Show. -Youtube is down right now, but I will link em up later.

Thanks CC

I have 8 AM class today and I sometimes grab breakfast which I did today. As I sat down, immediately Sportscenter broke a "Breaking News" flash across the screen.
"CC Sabathia has signed with the.... New York Yankees."

Right then and there I knew my day was going to suck. The Evil Empire got their prized fish after waiting over a month to get him and it took everything possible for them to get him. Now some of you are mad, upset and I am here to tell you that you really cannot be for a various amount of reasons.

One of the reasons is the Yankees added another year and another 21 million dollar to their offer. Are you willing to tell me you would pass on 22.8 million a year?! There is not a chance in hell that you would. The sole fact that the Yanks had to add the year and the money tells me he wasnt going to be a Yankee until they made a "Godfather" offer which they did. I am rather convinced he dd turn down the Yankees original offer therefore it led to this monstrous deal. Not only that but the Yankees threw the kitchen sink at him bringing in Reggie Jackson and other various things. He sets a new standard for pitchers and now will be the prize attraction at the new Yankee Stadium.

New York's GM Brian Cashman had to do this if he let another prized free agent go away especially to Milwaukee, his head would be getting set for the guillotine, simple as that. He wanted to leave Las Vegas with either CC being a Yankee or very close. As someone on 1250 WSSP said "Must be nice to have all the money in the world." Yeah, it is but it takes a pitch to convince Sabathia that he wanted to be a Yankee.

Dont call CC a traitor or anything like that because I damn well know none of you take that back the state of baseball euphoria we all had this summer. Also we all made comments all summer, "Well this is nice but we all know he will be in New York or something like it." Watching him pitch every three, four, or five days was like watching Brett Favre in the prime of his career. You knew something special could happen anytime he took the mound. Thank you CC for being so loyal to the Brewers, laying your career on the line and giving it your all. Milwaukee thanks you.

As Doz said to me today.....
"just shows how baseball will never change"
"nobody matter what the Yankees will always be able to outbid everyone by a ridiculous amount"

Its the mindset you need to have in terms of baseball.

Another Answer to the Mets Problems

Yes I know there are more pressing issues at hand but with finals upcoming, I am not having enough time to post every bit of news I am hearing lately. The biggest one lately is Francisco Rodriguez is now a Met after signing a 3 yr. 37 million dollar deal with the Mets.

I myself think thats an outrageous deal to give a closer even though he has been a force the past couple of years, he has seemed to break down once the months of September and October roll around in the past couple of years. The only reason why the money makes sense is because he is playing in the National League now, and only a few teams have seen the electric stuff he has. I am positive he will be successful in his years in New York and once again, they look like the power of the National League.

The big question is... will this finally take them over the hump? My answer is-Most likely IF they get some middle relief help. It will do them no good to have a top three closer if they cannot get to him in tight situations. Granted, having Wagner out hurt the Mets but it didnt do as much damage as the middle relief. They need to shore up that issue if they want to sniff the playoffs this year.

Now moving on to other big disappointing signings....

Games To Watch

Tuesday:

22. Davidson vs. West Virigina- I hope Stephan Curry just goes off in Madison Sqaure Garden where this game is being played. The Mountianeers have played teams to low scoring and they are going to figure out a way to stop Curry. The 1-3-1 is susceptable to the 3, uh oh. DAV 71-58

6. Texas vs. 12. Vilanova- Second matchup of the Jimmy V Classic and first off, how the hell is Nova in the Top 15. Texas beat a good UCLA team last week at home. Should be a good matchup between A.J. Abrams and Scottie Reynolds. Basically whoever inside game is better will win the game or if one of the teams is on fire from 3. I will take Texas. TEXAS 66-62

Wednesday:

4. Gonzaga at Washington State- The Cougars have only lost to Pittsburgh and Baylor which are not bad losses and face the Zags who had trouble with Indiana until the final couple of minutes. The Zags could really flex their muscles if they blow out the Cougars on the road, wont happen but they should be able to win. ZAGS 68-60

Nothing really else the rest of the week, sorry guys.

What About a Playoff?

Here's my personal idea on a college football playoff, you have the 6 major conference winners and whoever else in the top 16 of the BCS. Giving a home game to the top 8 teams and have them face-off during the week of Dec. 15, having games on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday if need be because of final exams. Then have the 8 team playoff during the week before Jan. 1, then have the Final Four on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd then play a week later. Heres what it will look like...

BYU would be out of it because Virgina Tech jumps them because they won their conference despite being out of the top 16.

16. Virgina Tech at 1. Oklahoma- This would be a battle of pretty solid defense facing a great offense and it will probably result in a Sooner victory as they would likely dominate down the stretch. Oklahoma advances

9. Boise State at 8. Penn State- The Broncos would get to show if they were legit to play in the bowls as they face the tough crowd in Happy Valley. In my opinion, Daryll Clark would be too much for Boise State. Penn St. advances

12. Cincinnati at 5. USC- This would really prove if the Bearcats were for real but they would have to travel to the Coliseum which has proven unforgiving so many times. USC advances.

13. Oklahoma State at 4. Alabama- The Tide would definitely be after revenge and the Cowboys proved they could stop nobody on defense. This game in my opinion would get ugly. Bama advances.

11. TCU at 6. Utah- A rematch of early this year and it was a close battle. This would also probably put the Mountain West on the map because one of these team advances to play one of the big guns. TCU advances.

14. Georgia Tech at 3. Texas- Good matchup, it would be interesting to see how Paul Johnson matches up against the Longhorns. I think you would have a good battle but by the end of the game, the Longhorns would advance.

10. Ohio State at 7. Texas Tech- Another great game could the Buckeyes stop the Red Raiders arsenal? Would the Red Raiders have an answer for Terrelle Pryor, what about Crabtree versus Michael Jenkins. Red Raiders advance.

15. Georgia vs. 2. Florida- The cocktail party part deux but now its in the Swamp instead of a neutral location. These two also have no lost between each other so there would be no lost between each teams but in the end the Gators would get it done again. Florida.

So I only picked one upset but I am sure there would be more because the nature of the game. Now on to the round of 8....

1. Oklahoma vs. 8. Penn State-Cotton Bowl- Giving the Sooners the location advantage, you would have a great matchup featuring two conference winners and a complete slugfest. I will take OU offense, barely though. Oklahoma advances.

4. Alabama vs. 5. USC-Georgia Dome- The Trojans would have to travel across the Mississippi but no one gets up for big games like Pete Carroll's teams do. I think the Trojans defense is a bit better than Bama's. A close defensive battle with the Trojans winning. USC advances.

11. TCU vs. 3. Texas-San Diego- A battle for Texas and a chance for the mid-majors to show their worth. Horned Frogs defense couldnt stop Oklahoma and they sure as hell cant stop Texas as they advance.

7. Texas Tech vs. 2. Florida-Orlando- This game would have so much hype around it because of the two offenses at hand but at the end of the day, its Florida defense that would take them to victory in this one.

Final Four...
1. Oklahoma vs. 5. USC-Sugar Bowl- You have to keep the Trojans away from Pasadena unless they were the overall number one seed so they find themselves in New Orleans for this one. I think this would be down to the wire with the Taylor Mays picking Bradford off in the end zone to seal it.

2. Florida vs. 3. Texas-Rose Bowl- Another game where you would see ratings throughout the roof and the Longhorns go back to Pasadena where they have been very successful throughout the years but Tebow exposes their weak defense in a victory.

2. Florida vs. 5. USC-BCS Nat'l Championship- What a game this would be. The Gators get the advantage playing in the state of Florida. You also get a road-weary Trojans teams traveling to the South for the third straight weekend. This game would be a classic with Tebow running in a touchdown with .03 left on the clock for a Florida win.

One can only dream.

Big Time Bowl Breakdown

There wont be any predictions made on this post, we shall wait until the week of everything and there are rumors of a live blog on 1st of January but we shall see about that one. Also following this post will be how a 16 team playoff would look like it (we can only dream).

BCS Bowls:
Oklahoma vs. Florida-BCS National Championship Game: This game will be everything and then some. Tim Tebow is my Heisman once again, he has willed his team to victory and whether you love/hate Florida, Tebow is something else. The guy is a class act and a motivational leader for young kids. Oklahoma offense has yet to be figured out and Sam Bradford is a close second in the Heisman. As much as Texas deserves it, this game will be just as good.

Penn State vs. USC-Rose Bowl- I will be glued to my TV for this one because I think the Nittany Lions have enough offense to keep up with USC defense and I hope that Penn State keeps it close for the sake of the Big 10.

Alabama vs. Utah-Sugar Bowl- For the Mid-Major sake, they better hope that the Utes can keep this one close, they havent seen a team like the Crimson Tide on the offensive and defensive sides of the football. They need a huge performance out of Brian Johnson and the defense in general.

Ohio State vs. Texas-Fiesta Bowl- Yes we all know that Ohio State has been the bridesmaids for the last couple of years but I really think this is going to be a close battle with the Longhorns having little defense plus they really havent seen a quarterback like Terrelle Pryor all season.

Virgina Tech vs. Cincinnati-Orange Bowl- I think this one will be better than people expect. The Hokies could give us a preview of how good they are going to be in the next couple years and the Bearcats could prove why they could be a mainstay in the BCS for many years if Brian Kelly stay like he says he will.

Other Interesting Games
Georgia vs. Michigan State-Capital One Bowl- Usually a good game and it features two great running backs in Javon Ringer and Knowshawn Moreno. It will be interesting to see if the Dawgs have solved their defense problems.

Boise State vs. TCU-Poinsettia Bowl- I will be watching this one in a battle of great mid-major teams going at it. TCU has already played spoiler this year and you wonder if the Horned Frog defense can go play for play with the great Bronco offense.

Oregon vs. Oklahoma State-Holiday Bowl- This game could break the scoreboard and the Holiday Bowl has had some classics in the past. Also this might be Mike Bellotti best coaching job of his career as he has finally found a soild quarterback.

Ole Miss vs. Texas Tech-Cotton Bowl- The Red Raiders should be playing in the BCS but oh well, this should be a great game. Houston Nutt tends to take it up on notch when he is an underdog and he will have to figure out an answer for Graham Harrell-Michael Crabtree.

Happy Bowl Season.

NCAA College Basketball Weekend Watch

The weekend picks will consist of big games until the conference season at the beginning of Janaury because there would be so many picks that would say the same damn thing about a team getting blown out so here we go...

4. Duke at Michigan- a rematch of the 2k Classic Final this year where Duke shot out of the 1-3-1 zone and they are starting to show how good they really are after destroying the Boliermakers, I think they shouldnt have much trouble with the Wolverines today. DUKE 81-69

5. Gonzaga vs. Indiana- I know this going to be a blowout but I just want to make sure to rub in itno the Snake face. The Hoosiers will get curbstomped by the Zags as they will be too big and physical for the Tanned One's bunch. ZAGS 85-66

7. Notre Dame vs. Ohio State- Another good game that we are blessed with watching on ESPNU. The Buckeyes proved me wrong when they beat up the Hurricanes earlier this week and B.J. Mullins gets the advantage of not playing Haragody but the Buckeyes need to find a way to stop Kyle McAlernary get his shot off tonight. Close game but the Irish pull it out late. ND 72-71

19. Arizona State vs. Nebraska- Being played on Sunday but a pretty good game if you ask me as the Cornhuskers have yet to lose and always seem to be a thorn in one team's side during the year. They have beat a couple decent teams this year but they probably will be no match for James Harden inside. ASU 71-63

21. Florida at Florida State- Well the football matchup last weekend didnt go in the way for the Noles but this one might. They did lost to Northwestern on the road so its unknown how good they are but the Noles play great at home. Gators pull away late. UF 75-66

22. Miami (FL) at Kentucky- Good battle between two teams that could use a win. The Wildcats have been picking up momentum and this could show if they could be a difference maker in the SEC. The Canes look bad without Jack McClinton after he was ejected but he's playing so they should win, I think it will be a back-forth battle though. MIA 66-62

Enjoy the weekend.

-Charlie.

Championship Week Picks

Sorry about missing the MAC championship game last night, I was out of the office all afternoon and had no real time to get it posted. I would of predicted a close Ball State win but I would never expected Buffalo to run them out of Ford Field, Turner Gill should be a favorite on Washington, Syracuse, Auburn, and Mississippi State list because he took a Buffalo team who have never been good, and built them in a MAC champion in under three years.

ACC Championship
17. Boston College vs. 25. Virigina Tech- We can finally decide who wins the crazed ACC and I think the biggest thing will be Tyrod Taylor versus the Boston College LB crew. If Taylor runs wild all day, it will be a long one for the Eagles but I think their defense is really good, which will show today. BC 27-17

SEC Championship
1. Alabama vs. 4. Florida- Here we go. This is the showdown today that we are all waiting for. Anyone who I have talked has been anticipating this matchup. I think its a straight toss-up, one hand you have the most explosive offense in the nation and pretty solid defense. On the other hand, you have an NFL-ready offensive line and a good defense. I will take the O-Line power, but just barely if this isnt a classic, I will be pissed. BAMA 31-28

Big 12 Championship
2. Oklahoma vs. 20. Missouri- A rematch of last year game and it doesnt look like it will be much different this year. The only way it will be if Dainel can keep up with Bradford step for step but that hasnt happen this year when the Tigers play Big 12 South teams so dont expect tonight. OKLA 52-41

Other Games today...
5. USC at UCLA- Both teams are wearing their home colors and both playing with two timeouts. I think its pretty classy of Neuheisel to give up two of his timeouts too. I dont think it will matter much because the Bruins offense is weak and well USC defense is unreal. As Lendale White said... USC 45-7

13. Cincinnati at Hawaii- Most times that Hawaii trip is just for shits and giggles when you dont make a bowl game but the Bearcats are playing in a BCS bowl. They should be able to win this one against the Rainbow Warriors. CINCY 35-17

23. Pittsburgh at Connecticut- The game going on right now but its no score, I think you will see the Panthers be able to take control of the game with LeSean McCoy and they should win. PITT 24-6
'
Others to Watch..
East Carolina vs. Tulsa
Arizona State at Arizona
South Florida at West Virginia

Graham Harrell- "Good Chance Leach Leaves" UPDATE

Not a great comment if you are a Texas Tech fan.

The starting quarterback of the Red Raiders said that there is a "great chance" that head coach Mike Leach leaves from Texas Tech. Argh. First off I do not know why Harrell is saying this when they have a bowl game to worry about and its a pretty demoralizing statement to send to the fans of the Red Raiders. Because if Leach doesnt come back, likely no more Michael Crabtree and no more explosive run/gun offense.

Harrell does make a good point about how he works the best with the talent he has because Texas and Oklahoma usually get to the players before Leach. Harrell further explained how Leach would be that much better if he had first crack at recruits.

He is favored to get the Auburn job if he wants it but he is still playing second fiddle in Alabama to Nick Saban so I dont understand why he would want to change, the only real reason is his wallet gets alot fatter. Leach already withdrew his name from the Washington job (said to be going to USC coordinator Steve Sarkasian) but I believe he will be the head coach at Auburn.

They are now rumoring that the Red Raiders offered Leach 5 years 12 million which is a nice raise to say the least.
