The Packers hired Dom Capers a long time veteran coach to be their new defensive coordinator.
I think this is a great move by the Packers because he isnt a 3-4, or 4-3 specialist, he has done both which is really impressive as a coach. I think Capers should explore the idea of becoming a 3-4 defense because lets face it most teams that run it are very successful see: Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and Miami all playoff teams with strong defenses. Also it would give the Packers a chance to explore different options in free agency and the NFL Draft.
I think that if the Defensive Line becomes a three man system, I think you will Cullen Jenkins, Johnny Jolly, and either a draft pick/free agent at the other defensive end. I think the idea of Julius Peppers being a part of the Packer franchise would be something special but I also think there are many available D-ends in the draft that could help us out too.
In the linebacker crew, I think I would go with Barnett, Hawk, Kampman, and Bishop. I really like how Bishop filled in for Barnett this year and I think he has deserved a shot at being a starter. Kampman would be fine as a rushing OLB because of his pure athleticism and size. Although I think he would be pulled during obvious passing downs and I think the time has come for Brady Poppinga to get the hell out of Green Bay. I dont see his value, I would love the Packers to draft Rey Maualuga as well.
In the secondary, everything would stay the same no real need to make any drastic moves. I would explore the idea of getting Malcolm Jenkins if Maualuga wasnt available because we need to move on from Al Harris and Charles Woodson in the near future as of now, I think Harris-Woodson still have a couple years left.
