Today was supposed to be the day that one of the greatest sports upsets was supposed to happen. It had appeared that Tom Waston at the ripe age of fifty-nine was going to take his sixth British Open crown and maybe go down as the best links player ever. In addition, he would save this weekend at Turnberry after Tiger Woods failed to make the cut for only the fifth time in his career. That all came to a crashing halt for Waston on the 72nd hole.
Watson bogeyed the final hole with an awful miss from six feet away from the hole and like we all know in golf when the wheels starting falling off they usually come off completely. That is exactly what happened with Waston today as Stewart Cink laid in the weeds playing good golf with a one under 69 forcing a four hole playoff.
Cink then did what he did all day, played consistent while Watson was spraying the ball left and right looking like he didnt belong for the first time all weekend at Turnberry with the Scots all groaning in despair that their hero of thirty-three years ago run was finally coming to an end.
People are trying to say that Cink is a bad guy for wrecking sports dreams but to be honest, he is one of the classiest guys on the PGA Tour. I have never heard a bad word about Cink and is the type of guy that you want to see win a major in his lifetime. Therefore I hope Stewart doesnt get beat up for being a competitor and not just lying down for one of the greats.
