Another deal went down today in the NBA in which the New Orleans Hornets traded Tyson Chandler for Joe Smith, and Chris Wilcox whose contracts both expire at the end of the year. Once again, this trade doesnt really excite me that much.
From New Orleans point of view, Chandler has been a shadow of himself last year. I mean it seemed last year he would fill up a box score with numbers like 20-10 or somewhere around that range. Now he is only at 9 ppg and he seems to get babied inside by better centers. I could understand the Hornets displeasure with Chandler but now their front court features David West, Chris Wilcox, Ryan Bowen, and Joe Smith. That will not get it done in the West who have the bevy of the big men in the NBA. They have now become a team with one of the best point guards but nothing else. West still can get it done somewhat but a lot like Chandler, he hasnt been half as good as last year. I wouldnt be surprised if the Hornets miss the playoffs.
Now in the case of the Oklahoma City Thunder who seems to be everyone's favorite worst team because of all the young talent have a pretty good formation of young guns. Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, and Chandler. They add Blake Griffin or Ricky Rubio in the draft, they will probably have the best young team not named Portland. I think they already have a good nucleus and Chandler's presence inside should help them maybe win a couple more games. But I do think we need to classify Chandler as a bust. He was a top five pick and hasnt lived up to that hype.
UPDATE:
Tyson Chandler fails his physical so he is back with New Orleans. Awkward.
