Rankings... Should They Matter in September?

We talked about the collapse of Ole Miss a couple days ago and how the top 5 has changed more times than Pamela Anderson's bust size in the past couple of weeks. As I was getting ready for school, Sportscenter anchor Josh Elliot and Robert Smith were having a debate on whether teams should be ranked before the month of September.

I thought about this and I really like seeing preseason rankings because it puts everything up for discussion plus let fans debate whose team is the best. It also builds the hype around things going on in College Football but its not really rewarding the best teams out there. It is just giving rankings to teams the "experts" believe are going to best teams in college football. I think the rankings are something you need for the extreme fans where they do not know pro football just college. Places like Auburn, Baton Rogue, Eugene, Austin, and other places would be up in arms if they didn't know where their team stood at the beginning of the year.

My counter-argument would be the scores of all to the top 10 teams going down in the first four weeks of the year. South Carolina, Iowa and Oregon are both good teams with the jury still out about Washington but if we waited until this week, we could of really decided who belongs in the top 25. I believe the Ducks would be in there despite their lost to Boise St.

My personal rankings of the top 10 going off just results...
1. Florida
2. Alabama
3. Texas
4. LSU
5. Virgina Tech
6. USC
7. Ohio State
8. Cincinnati
9. Iowa
10. Oklahoma
