AL East Preview

I am now beginning the previews of all the divisions and then an overall look at the Milwaukee Brewers pitchers/position players.  I will highlight their key acquisitions, a player I like, player I hate, and finally a prediction for the upcoming season.

1. New York Yankees- KEY ACQ: OF Curtis Granderson, DH Nick Johnson, SP Javier Vasquez  I LIKE: Granderson: Numbers were down last year, but now gets the benefits of playing at Yankee Stadium I HATE: A.J. Burnett: Ton of innings last year and the year before, are we all ready for the headline "Burnett Goes Down with an Elbow Injury."  PREDICTION: The Yanks will win the AL East by a small margin, but I think they will find themselves in the World Series for a second straight year.

2. Boston Red Sox- KEY ACQ: SP John Lackey, OF Mike Cameron, 3B Adrian Beltre, SS Marco Scutero I LIKE: Victor Martinez:  He has been a consistent player for years, he will benefit being in-between Pedoria/Youk.  I HATE: Lackey:  Everything I am hearing about him doesn't sound good, risky arm, and poor stats in Fenway.  PREDICTION: The Sox will be the Wild Card and the second best team in American League. They will fall to the Yankees in a seven-game classic this coming October.

3. Tampa Bay Rays- KEY ACQ: RP Rafael Soriano I LIKE: David Price- Now a main stay in the rotation, I think there is no stopping him from having a great season.  I HATE: Pat Burrell- Obvious choice, but seriously he doesn't belong in a lineup.  PREDICTION: They will push the Sox for that Wild Card and fall off just slightly. In my opinion, the three best teams in the American League reside in the AL East.

4. Baltimore Orioles- KEY ACQ: 3B Miguel Tejada SP Kevin Millwood RP Mike Gonzalez  I LIKE: Matt Wieters- I think he will live up to the hype and have a great season, I bet he hits three or four by July  I HATE: Tejada- I like the fact he moved to third but let's face it, hasn't been the same since roids'.  PREDICTION: I think they could finish as high as third in another division and they have a ton of young talent who will grow.  This is a team I think will be tougher come August/September.

5. Toronto Blue Jays- KEY ACQ: SP Brendan Morrow  I LIKE: Ricky Romero- Young guy who had a pretty strong rookie campaign, will get better.  I HATE: Vernon Wells- Might be in some trade rumors come July, but I think he will have a sub-par year.   PREDICTION: It will not be a pretty one for the Jays as A.H. (After Halladay) begins and they have somewhat of an offense, but I would expect a 10 to 15 win drop off at least.

Once Again Kenny Williams Plays With Fire

You have to think that there are alot of Chicago White Sox fans scratching their heads right now after the two mid-season moves that General Manager Kenny Williams has made... First he brings in Jake Peavy who might not play this year and has the pitching version of Matt Holiday written all over him. Now he brings in Alex Rios from the Blue Jays who recently couldnt hit sand if he fell off a camel.

The other thing that is puzzling about the Rios waiver claim is the fact the White Sox have a loaded outfield as it is and they have Jim Thome arguably the league's best Designated Hitters. So you are meaning to tell me that Rios will be a twelve million dollar a year bench player for Manager Ozzie Guillien. I guess he could play center but that means the Sox lose their leadoff hitter in Scott Podsendik.

The one thing that is saving Williams' ass right now is that Rios is only twenty-eight years of age and that means he still hasnt hit his peak years. In addition, they have a spot in right field open next year likely with Jermaine Dye becoming a free agent. Which would lead to Williams pitching to the owners that he basically signed Rios to replace Dye two months early.

In some aspects, this deal really does make sense but to me maybe my Blue Jay fan Sepi could help me out here Alex Rios seems like a Bill Hall-type player where he had one amazing year and cannot get himself out of that deep black hole (Rios is way better than Hall by the way). Who knows maybe the taste of Chicago will revive his spiraling career.

Settle Down Sepi

I am calling this fan week on Chucks Corner. If you want me to write about something or you want a quote albeit it be something good like Seth or Votto you will get in there. Now I havent spoked to our only Toronto Blue Jays fan in the city of Wauwatosa, Sepi but I am sure he is on pins/needles about his boy Roy Halladay getting traded. I told him at the beginning of the year that this will happen but now I am here to tell you that it will not.

Now this might be the kiss of death because I have said multiple times that something will/will not happen therefore Halladay might get traded tomorrow for all I know. My thoughts on Halladay is that the Jays are trying to get too much out of teams right now for their possible suitors. They would like to get a shit ton of talent for Halladay who many could argue is best pitcher in our decade looking at stats alone although I have a problem saying that because he hasnt done anything in the postseason.

I think another reason why Halladay isnt going anywhere is the team who seemed to be the favorite has all the sudden caught steam in the past two weeks, the Philadelphia Phillies. Why do they need more pitching when they seem to be doing just fine without Doc? The only real reason is this year you might not get past Los Angeles due to Cole Hamels having a rough year plus other reasons. If they really want to repeat then they have to get Doc.

I mean if the Jays wanted this to happened, I think like CC Sabathia deal last year it would have happened already because they would have asked for a respectable amount for their guy. Toronto is really expecting teams to give up their best hitting and pitching prospects where I believe thats unrealistic to think a team will do that these days. Reason being is there is so much hype now made up about all of these stud prospects that rarely anyone wants to give up a "Hanley Ramirez-like" for a "Josh Beckett-like" player. Doc is staying in Canada, dont fret Sepi.

The Surprises of the American League

I have written apology letters to my friends on this blog before and I am not going to the have a full out apology article to my friend Sepehr who loves the Toronto Blue Jays and sit on top of the AL East. But I am going to take a look at the MLB teams that are top of the division and I am not going to touch on the NL Central with Brewers Weekly on Sunday night or Monday...

Toronto Blue Jays- The "Fighting Sepehrs" have really impressed me so far because they have put together a great pitching staff around their ace Roy Halladay. Brent Cecil has been great so far as well as Scott Richmond, and Brian Tallet. Now today, they trot out another young pitcher Robert Ray and he throws one unearned run today in a victory against the White Sox. Is this team slowly becoming Tampa Bay of last year? My answer... Probably. I wouldnt be surprised if they stay close to the top of the AL East because they have starting pitching and a bullpen despite the B.J. Ryan struggles who is done by July when they get a closer. Their offense is stacked with good young guys like Adam Lind and Travis Snider plus I still consider Vernon Wells a new-aged veteran.

Kansas City Royals- The Royals are back in business for the first time in my long lifetime although they are sort of like the Florida Marlins of the AL because they start off strong and fade during the year. Here's the difference though.. they have Zach Grienke who I believe we can say is the best pitcher in the AL so far right this season. They play in an AL Central that it might take only 85 wins to win the division. They still have guys like Luke Hochavar who was a number one pick and Brian Bannister whose another top pick who has a ton of potential. The big question will be can they last without Joakim Soria for the next couple of weeks. If they can withstand not having their closer, I really like their chances to win the AL Central.

Texas Rangers- I always thought that the Texas Rangers had the offense to be a force in the AL but I wasnt sure if their pitching was good enough to hold up leads for them. I was wrong in that aspect which surprises me because they have the likes of Vincente Padilla and Kevin Milwood leading your rotation, I would completely run for cover. The other big thing is Josh Hamilton wasnt playing almost all year and the Rangers still found ways to win without their best hitter. Now he is hitting the ball making that offense even tougher. I still think the Los Angeles Angles who are getting their pitching back and starting to heat up slowly are good enough to still take this division although they are not the run away favorite like in years past.
