Dashing Super Bowl Hopes on July 22
The biggest reason why I feel this way is Ed Reed announced yesterday that he will be out six weeks of the NFL season from hip surgery. Even though he will be back for most of the season, I think this is something that could really hinder the Ravens all season. As a defensive back, he needs his hips to rotate and make plays. In the last couple years, Reed has been the defensive stalwart for their team more so than Ray Lewis. Reed is also getting pretty old (31) and I cannot imagine that the Ravens being a top notch team with this problem.
Also the first six games are pretty tough for the most part: at the New York Jets, at Cincinnati, vs. Cleveland, at Pittsburgh, vs. Denver, and at New England. I could see 3-3 for the Ravens to start out the season but I could also see 2-4, the Browns game in week three is their only real lock to start the year off without Ed Reed. Thankfully, they have the Buffalo Bills and a bye week in the next two games if Reed's injury took longer than believed.
This isn't their only problem in the defensive secondary. They have no cornerbacks right now, Chris McAillister and Samari Rolle are both out and they really have a bunch of nobodies who will go up against the best wide recievers. Did everyone forget how much Baltimore was penalized last season too? I mean yes they added Anquan Boldin, which is a huge upgrade offensively but to me, it's a bunch of smoke and mirrors for Baltimore.

Breaking Down NFL Trades... A Couple Days Late!
CROMARTIE TO THE JETS: I like this deal a lot of the Jets who had to give up chicken scraps to get this guy who is 6'3 and has a ridiculous wing span. Oh also might I mention that he will be the second-best corner on this team playing aside Darrelle Revis? Will there be any team that will be able to compete with the Jets secondary next year. Maybe the Colts' receiving core but that's the only one that comes to mind. In my opinion, the Jets have moved past the New England Patriots in terms of the best team in the AFC East. Also if they add Adalius Thomas who thrived in Rex Ryan's system... look out.
KERRY RHODES TO THE CARDINALS: One of the more interesting moves of the weekend was the Jets who just brought in a great cornerback ship out their top free safety. I can understand the move because Rhodes has been sort of a headache for the Jets in the last couple of years and I get the Cardinals to replace Antrel Rolle, yet the Cardinals seem to be rebuilding so I have no idea why they would give up draft picks to get Rhodes.
ANQUAN BOLDIN TO THE RAVENS: Two things finally happened in the NFL. Anquan Boldin is no longer second banana to Larry Fitzgerald therefore he is finally going to get to prove if he really is a number one receiver. Second thing, the Ravens actually have a receiver to throw the ball to and actually catch it (here's to you Derrick Mason!). I think Boldin will excel in that offense that is mostly run first but now, the Ravens can be more diverse with what they do on offense in having a top 10 receiver and running back. Not to mention, this year becomes put up or shut up for Joe Flacco. Best pick up of the free agency so far in my opinion.

Divisional Ramblings
New Orleans 45 Arizona 14
- This game was once again a boring game and I think it can be said that the NFL Playoffs have flat-out sucked. I would compare the playoffs to going to the strip club expecting at least three to five good looking strippers that look like they shouldn't be there but instead, you knew all these girls were destined for this job.
-Anyways, the one thing that pleased me about the Saints game was the outburst of Reggie Bush. He played as good as I have ever seen him in the NFL. He dominated the game as a running back and punt returner. In addition, more touchdowns means more Kim Kardashian on TV, good times.
- Sean Payton may be the smartest mind in football, the guy is a complete genius. I am impressed every week when watching him dissect a defense is awesome.
-The block on Kurt Warner was one of the hardest hits I have seen and reminded me of Warren Sapp's hit on Chad Clifton years ago, which led to "PUT A JERSEY ON!" comment, personal favorite of mine.
- Adding on to the Warner hit, I think he will retire and that will lead the Cards to bringing in a free agent or a drafting some QB in 2010 Draft. As much as it pains me to say it, Matt Leinart cannot do it for an NFL team. Loved him like Bush but he just doesn't have it.
Indianapolis 20 Baltimore 3
-Honestly, I didn't watch a single down. I went to see my high school play our rival and I am glad I did, we lost but still it was better that watching this game.
-Joe Flacco was hurt yes but if he was healthy, I doubt it will make a difference against the Colts. He is not there yet as a quarterback in the NFL.
-I cannot believe Ed Reed is thinking about retiring, one of the best players in the last ten years and has probably a top-five sound clip, if you haven't seen this... your welcome.
Minnesota 31 Dallas 3
-One more week of talking about how great Brett Favre is and can he do it? Well probably but we do not need to discuss where I am at the point of puking, thank you.
-Probably one of the worst FU touchdown I have seen in a while. No reason to do play action and to even throw the ball is insane, I hope Favre plays another year and Dallas gets him good in that game next year.
-If you look back on my picks, I said Flozell Adams is good enough to hold down Jared Allen... well Adams went down, and all hell broke loose.
-Therefore it wasn't Tony Romo's fault that he couldn't handle the pressure of the Vikes rush. It was very reminiscent of the first Packer game.
- I do wonder if Wade Phillips decides to pooch punt instead of throwing Shaun Shusiam out there for a forty-eight yard field goal. I think the Vikes still win because of the Adams injury but still, it could have changed things.
NY Jets 17 San Diego 14
-I told you so! I told you so!
-The Chargers are the new Miami Dolphins of the 1990s, could always get to the playoffs and have a lot of promise but can never win the big game plus known for big time chokes.
-Darrelle Revis was only thrown at six times, which means that people really need to start realizing the Jets secondary is doing some special things.
-The Shonn Greene/Thomas Jones combo is lethal and when you add Leon Washington next year, you have a three-headed monster unless the Jets decide to get rid of one of the older guys.
Thats all for now and look forward to a hopefully fun Championship weekend.

Divisional Picks: Where Anything Can Happen
Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints- The Cardinals were impressive last weekend but let's remember how old Kurt Warner is... I could care less about his postseason stats, he has been proven to be inconsistent all year with good and bad games. Once again, not having Anquan Boldin will hurt them unless Early Doucet plays out of his mind again this week. The Saints are a better passing/rushing team than the Green Bay Packers who they gave up forty-five points. I think Drew Brees wants this Super Bowl more than any quarterback right now and I think the Saints will play inspired football in the Superdome. I see the Saints getting a key defense stop in the third proving to be the difference maker. NO 42-34
Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts- I don't know why but I have a feeling this going to be a game where millions of people are left wondering what the hell happen as if they were in The Hangover of something. Maybe it's Bill Simmons' theory on the wackiness of the Saturday Night game or just that Ed Reed is at full health making this team a lot better. I live with a Colts fan and I remember him always weary of teams with strong running games making the Ravens a prime example. The Colts I feel need a big game out of their running attack because if they can get a couple big gains that will allow Manning to expand the field. I think this game will rely on Billy Cundiff only to miss to the field goal, breaking the Ravens hearts. IND 23-21
Dallas Cowboys at Minnesota Vikings- People have been discussing on how this is the best game of the week, which I would agree I am the most excited for this particular game but I could see this game being a blowout either way with some help. I am taking the Cowboys and here is why... Antoine Winfield is a step slower since coming back leading Miles Austin to have a big day, the Vikes line has been shaky all of December and once DeMarcus Ware came back the Boys' front seven looks unbeatable. Finally, Flozell Adams is good enough to contain Jared Allen. Funny, I didn't mention Mr. Favre or Mr. Romo because I think they cancel each other out, both play well. DAL 28-24
New York Jets at San Diego Chargers- I think this game is just as interesting as the one above because people still do not trust in the Jets and that might be a mistake. People are talking about Vincent Jackson's height at 6'5, but Andre Johnson is 6'4, so is Marques Colston, Darrelle Revis shut them down plus I could see him playing with a chip on his shoulder. The Chargers allowed 4.5 yards per rush, which could mean a big day for Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones. I completely agree with the ESPN folk that Antonio Gates is the difference maker in the ball game and could have big game, the offensive line for the Chargers is also key. I think Sanchise leads a final drive for the ages on Sunday. NYJ 24-20

Ramblings From the Wild Card Weekend
Jets 24 Bengals 14
-Joe Theismann is still allowed to be a color guy? My goodness was him, Tom Hammond, and Joe Gibbs just awful. I like Hammond, he does a great job with Notre Dame Football calls but he seemed so uncomfortable with the two former Redskins.
-Darrelle Revis is an absolute monster. I haven't watched that many games of the New York Jets but he is honestly the best cover corner in the league right now, better than Charles Woodson (Chuck does so much more on the field in terms of the run, zone coverage, other stuff). Look at the roll call of the guys he has shut down.
-Mark Sanchez, probably the one guy I am the happiest for because I enjoyed watching him at USC and I think he has the moxy to be a great quarterback. He got a lot of help from the running attack of Shonn Greene (awesome game too) and Thomas Jones.
-The offensive line of the Jets is seriously underrated; the best in the league that I have seen this year and that can propel their chances to continue.
-Carson Palmer, were you alive out there? Theismann could have done a better job out there
Dallas 34 Philadelphia 14
-The Cowboys impressed the most out of anybody this weekend. I thought they played the toughest out of any team and they look dangerous headed into the next few rounds.
-I think the one thing happened to the Eagles and it's simple: People figured out the game plan on DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy isn't doing much as a running back. McNabb just seemed lost out there, which is something we have grown acustomed to in years past.
-There wasn't much that stood out to me, just a dominating performance by Boys'. Like I said, they look damn good.
Baltimore 33 New England 14
-I thought there was no way this would be a blowout either way. I didn't trust the Ravens and I thought before Wes Welker went out with an injury, I thought the Pats were a sneaky Super Bowl pick. Ray Rice opening TD proved me wrong
-The Ravens got lucky that the officiating was so loose, big key for them and if that happens again in Indy look out.
-Ray Rice in my mind is a top ten running back and could be in that top five realm come next year. He has power/speed. Rice could be the difference maker of this playoffs.
- I would like to call this end of the Patriot Dynasty, I think Bill Belichick isn't the same coach he was a couple years ago. I cannot explain it but with the Jets getting better, the Dolphins are still young, and the Bills get the right coach, the AFC East becomes very dangerous.

Wildcard Picks
5. NY Jets at 4. Cincinnati Bengals- I think the Jets are coming into this game way too overconfident with Rex Ryan blabbering about how they are "the best team" and "should be favored." Somebody tell Rex that he has a rookie quarterback who has been know to be unstable in games. I understand why people like the Jets with Darrelle Revis and their rushing attack. I think this is a close game and because of the experience of Carson Palmer will be the difference today. CIN 23-17
6. Philadelphia at 3. Dallas- My dad always told me "Charlie it's tough to beat a team three times." I always remember that when I am watching games or picking games. I really like what the Cowboys are doing in the last couple days and seem to be that team thats getting hot at the right time. Tony Romo has to prove himself in the playoffs now, he did in December but still is unproven in the playoffs. Philadelphia beat teams they were supposed to but played poorly against playoff teams, not a good sign. I think they have the game plan for DeSean Jackson who is their home run hitter on offense. DAL 24-13
6. Baltimore at 3. New England- I don't know what it is about the Ravens but I hate watching them. A lot like Sanchez, I do not trust in Joe Flacco and if the Ravens fall behind early, they have to rely on Flacco. The Patriots although are a completely different team without Wes Welker who is the number one security blanket in the NFL and you have to expect a lot of double teams on Randy Moss. I think their defense will prevail in this game and trust me, this one will be an ugly one. NE 17-9
5. Green Bay at 4. Arizona- The Packers head into a familiar place in the Desert where they have played well in the first two games and Aaron Rodgers seemed very comfortable as well. Basically the same stuff we have been saying about the Packers, need to keep Rodgers protected, get pressure on Kurt Warner, and good secondary play. I think they can do all three and Clay Matthews will be the player of this game, watch out for him. Plus the NFL Network is reporting that Anquan Boldin is out for the game, which is a huge injury. I think the Pack show their teeth in this one. GB 31-20

Week 17 Picks: MIA
I really felt uninspired to write a picks post because honestly most of these games do not matter to teams and they want to lose to get a higher draft pick at least in my opinion. If I am team knowing I will not make the playoffs and I believe my job will be back for next season, everyone gets time oThe other game thff into the next season. Although, I would argue that some coaches and teams would like to play the role of spoliers if they are given the oppertunity.
In the two or three big games this afternoon/night, I think that Philadelphia beats Dallas, it's going to be a close game but the Eagles have had success against the Cowboys in Dallas plus I really do not believe the Cowboys have a cornerback to cover DeSean Jackson, he will have a huge game today. Don't expect a blowout though, Tony Romo will play tough and the Cowboys lose on a final drive. PHI 27-24
The game that seems to be everyone's upset is Oakland and Baltimore, I also like the Raiders in the spolier role because they have risen up to te occasion on more than once against really good teams. I am still not convinced that the Ravens are that good of a team, they are the most undisplinced team in the NFL and Joe Flacco looks average at best. I see it as a defensive struggle with the Mitch Pratts hitting a FG for the win. OAK 13-10
The last game of the day between Cincinnati and the New York Jets could have some importance but if New England were to lose to Houston (currently tied in the third) then the game doesn't matter whatsoever. The Bengals have the tie-breaker and I think they would rather play Denver again then the Jets in back-to-back weeks if they win. The Jets break their fans hearts every year and its going to be freezing in the big city where Mark Sanchez has 1 TD 8 INTs in cold weather this year... not good. CINCY 21-13

NFL Preview: AFC East/AFC North
AFC East

Their defense is a bit shaky but their offense can handle that.
2. Miami Dolphins- Key Players: RB Ronnie Brown, LB Channing Crowder, LB Joey Porter Key Games: at Indianapolis (9/21) vs/at NY Jets (10/12, 11/1) vs. New Orleans (10/25) at/vs New England (11/8, 12/6) at Tennessee (12/20) vs. Pittsburgh (1/3) Outlook- The Phins have a reasonable schedule and you wonder how good Chad Pennington can be this year after a magical season ago. They will fall short of the playoffs but finish second.

4. Buffalo Bills- Key Players: RB Marshawn Lynch WR Terrell Owens S Donte Whitner Key Games- at/vs New England (9/14, 12/20) vs. New Orleans (9/27) at Tennessee (11/15) vs. Indianapolis (1/3) Outlook- I think it will be a rough year for TO and the boys with him already not liking the offense plus dealing without Lynch for 3 weeks.
(AFC North)1. Pittsburgh Steelers Key Players- QB Big Ben (saving space people!), WR Santonio Holmes, LB James Harriosn Key Games-vs. Tennessee (9/10) vs. San Diego (10/4) vs. Minnesota (10/25) at/vs Baltimore (11/22, 12/27) vs. Green Bay (12/20) Outlook- Wow, talk about an easy schedule, they will have home-field in the playoffs no doubt about it plus unreal media attention. Still a class act team. North
2. Baltimore Ravens: Key Players- S Ed Reed LB Terrell Suggs QB Joe Flacco Key Games- at San Diego (9/20) at New England (10/4) at Minnesota (10/18) vs. Indianapolis (11/15) vs/at Baltimore (11/22, 12/27) at Green Bay (12/7) Outlook- The first Wild Card winner of the AFC and their defense is going to tough as nails again. Flacco has a chance to be much better too.
3. Cincinnati Bengals: Key Players- QB Carson Palmer WR Chad OchoCinco WR Laveraneus Coles Key Games- at Green Bay (9/20) vs/at Pittsburgh (9/27, 11/15) at/vs Baltimore (10/11 11/8) at Minnesota (12/13) at San Diego (12/20) Outlook- This is my roommate E's surprise team of the year, I dont see it. Very tough schedule plus their defense isnt that special.
4. Cleveland Browns: Key Players- QB Brady Quinn WR Braylon Edwards DT Shaun Rogers Key Games- vs. Minnesota (9/13) at/vs Baltimore (9/27, 11/16) at/vs Pittsburgh (10/25, 12/10) vs. San Diego (12/6) Outlook- It is going to an ugly year for the Browns even though I enjoy Quinn a lot, he has no defense help.

Hous Heads West, Warner/Lewis Stay
HOUSHMANDZADEH TO SEATTLE- The Seahawks who are in desperate need of receivers inked T.J. Hous "your mamma?" to a five year 40 million dollar deal. Granted the Seahawks could use the help at receiver this is not a good move in my opinion. You are giving a thirty-two year old receiver that much money for that long of time seems ridiculous to me. I would rather pick up a couple nice receivers who would work well with a guy like Michael Crabtree. I am willing to bet Hous had about three years left in him. Also I think the guy is a bit of a headcase, he doesnt really like when he isnt getting the ball and he also shitted on the city of Cincinnati basically saying "Screw you, I am going elsewhere." That being said, I still think he will help the Seahawks next year and I am glad he isnt on Minnesota.
WARNER STAYS IN ARIZONA- Kurt Warner who led the Cardinals to their first Super Bowl has decided to stay as he inked a 2 year 23 million dollar deal with most of that money in the first year, a very smart move by Warner. Now the question is will Edgerrin James or Anquan Boldin be around with him? I think James will be long gone but the Cards should try to patch things up with Boldin, the guy is a legit number one receiver on any other team. Therefore he should get the money he deserves even at 1a.
LEWIS STAYING PUT IN BALTIMORE- This signing I was probably the happiest by because I couldnt see Ray Lewis put on another jersey or led another team. He is a Baltimore Raven for life and its good to see that Lewis will end his career a Raven instead of playing for the New York Jets or the Dallas Cowboys. I think Lewis will live up to his three year deal because there is still much more left in the tank and if he has Terrell Suggs back, they can be just as good as last year.

NFC-AFC Championship Recap
Well the day is done and we are down to two teams in the National Football League. A day that I thought would be very boring turned out to be rather exciting. I will break all down for you guys starting now...
Arizona 32 Philadelphia 25- For the first time in history, the Arizona Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl. The 2008-2009 sports season has already been filled with unpredictability and now add the Cardinals to the list.
This was a great game for the fans of teams not named the Eagles or the Cardinals, it had its ups and downs and alot of hair-pulling moments. The Cardinals had led 24-6 at halftime and I thought I would have a couple hours to watch 24, not so fast my friend. Donovan McNabb willed his team back from the grave finding his tight end Brent Celek for two big touchdowns. Then McNabb found DeSean Jackson deep for the go-ahead touchdown. The Cardinals showed poise as they brought the ball down the field including a clutch fourth and inches. Then they scored on a Tim Hightower screen pass from Kurt Warner on third goal. On the final drive, the Cardinals beared down as they stopped McNabb on a fourth down and many Philly fans will complain about non-pass interference call on Rodrick Hood on the final play. I think because Kevin Curtis had a chance to make the play afterwards, there was no need to make the call.
Kurt Warner who in my opinion is a Hall of Famer once again had a huge game throwing four touchdowns, no interceptions and only missing seven passes. Larry Fitzgerald is playing like the best wide receiver in football right now. I would compare his playoff performance with B.J. Upton of the Tampa Bay Rays. Fitz had an alright regular season but had a huge playoff season. I mean everyone was talking about the performance Anquan Boldin all year but now its all about Fitzgerald. The Eagles are now 1-4 in NFC Championship games under Andy Reid so basically they are the Bills of championship games. Brian Westbrook proved to be a non-factor again and McNabb performance especially in the second half was amazing. He threw for 375 yards with three touchdowns, and one interception. McNabb did everything he could but it wasnt enough as the corners for Philadelphia couldnt stop Fitzgerald or Boldin which brings up another point why wouldnt the blitz specialist Jim Johnson keep doing it when Warner was burning them consistently on the man-to-man coverage.
Pittsburgh 23 Baltimore 14- Many are saying this was one of the hardest hitting games ever witnessed and I would agree. This would be the perfect song on how to describe this game. So many guys got jacked up and the emotions were so high. Despite my bashing of the Steelers week in week out for their continuous coverage, they were the most consistent team in football.
The Steelers put up the first six points on the board with two field goals from this guy... yes this guy, I wonder whats his pickup line with girls? Then on a third and nine, Ben Roethlisberger scrambled out of the pocket which was the biggest thing he did all game; found Santonio Holmes for a long touchdown with some great down field blocking. The Ravens struck back with a goal line touchdown from Wills McGahee set up by Wisconsin own Jim Leonhard long punt return. The Steelers got another field goal by spiked one and then McGahee punched another teeder to make it 16-14. Then Troy Polamalu took back an interception to put the icing on the AFC Championship cake.
The hardest thing about the Steelers defense is the fact that no one can run the football on them. The Ravens had ran the ball more than anyone else in the NFL and they couldnt do shit against Steelers forcing Joe Flacco to pass the ball more than he had all throughout the playoffs. Speaking of Flacco, he looked like a rookie today. Flacco went 13/30, only 140 yards and three interceptions. I have enjoyed watching Ed Reed throughout the playoffs and he is a great player, probably the most dangerous playing after an interception BUT... Troy Polamalu is the best safety in the leauge. He makes so many plays to stop the run, creating deflections, or taking on back to the house as stated before.
The Ravens defense didnt look as strong as they did the last two games because of so many injuries. Terrell Suggs was not the same player he was with his banged-up shoulder and they lost Samari Rolle from the last game against Tennesse. Then all the other cornerbacks seemed to get hurt in the game today. The Ravens offense will be strong in the upcoming years but the question will be how much of their defense comes back? Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Terrell Suggs are all free agents next year which I think both Reed and Lewis are back but Suggs will move on.
I will give a Pittsburgh-Arizona next week because we still have two weeks before the game even is played..
-Charlie.

NFL Divisional Picks
Saturday
Baltimore at Tennessee- Some are calling this game boring and yes, it will probably have its moments although this will be one of the hardest hitting games you will ever see. The Titans are going to be ready to play this game, they havent played in a couple of weeks and the big key is Albert Hanyesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch are both back from injury. They need Kerry Collins to have a decent game to let the run develop. The Ravens defense is really tough right now and no one is playing better than Ed Reed is right now. Although when it all boils down to it, Joe Flacco is a rookie quarterback and I just dont see him able to carry his team. TENN 17-13
Arizona at Carolina- Everyone is saying that this game will be a complete blowout by the Carolina Panthers. You gotta believe that the Cards are using that as motivation all week to get their guys up for this playoff game. Kurt Warner still has it in him to lead this guys to victory and I think they can if they can stop the run like they did last weekend. But if the Panthers score two quick touchdowns or any early turnovers it could be a long game for Arizona. I will do a Lee Corso, "Closer than the experts think!" CAR 28-24
Sunday
Philadelphia at New York Giants- The big NFC East rematch, I think its crazy that there are people still doubting the Giants after all they have done this year so far. Also I think people are riding the jocks of Phillie a little too hard. Brian Westbrook had a huge game last year in the Meadowlands and for them to win, they need that out of him again. Eli Manning does need another reciever to step up for them to replace Swiss Plax because they hasnt happen yet. I will take the Giants in an ugly one. NYG 20-13
San Diego at Pittsburgh- Great stat for all you fans out there. San Diego is 0-13 against Pittsburgh in the regular season but the Chargers are 2-0 against the Steelers in the playoffs. I remember in 1995, no one thought that Stan Humpheries could beat the Steelers at Three Rivers and they did. Anyways, Darren Sproles is a perfect Ewing Theory candidate and I really think the Steelers havent seen a player like that this year. The big question is the Chargers defense shut down the Colts last weekend and what makes you think they cant do again with a lesser offense? I am taking the Chargers in an upset and will amaze myself on how Norv Turner wins playoff games with San Diego. SD 24-13
-Charlie.

Suggs' Bounty
I personally think nothing will come out of it because this seems to happen once a year- last year the Packers were questioned about after their corners had put a "bounty" on Adrian Peterson. Mark Scherleth of ESPN who I think is one of more intelligent people at ESPN said in his twelve years, he had never heard anything about purposely wanted to hurt a player. I somewhat agree, you always want to stop certain players but you never what to hurt the guy. You might have some sort of goal like hold him to 50 yards of rushing and use that as motivation. I am pretty sure thats what we have here.
The final note on this one is why do the Ravens think they are the hardest team in the NFL. They act like they are the baddest MFing defense you have ever since when in reality, they gave up 31 points to the Colts two weeks ago. Also another thing that pisses me off is ever since 2004, Ray Lewis always comes in late on tackles and then struts around like he made the tackle.
I dont know the Ravens were just a team I have never really enjoyed watching, maybe its because they got Trent Dilfer a Super Bowl ring, ew.
-Charlie.
