Be Careful What You Wish For...
Now let be known that I am not the biggest McNabb fan and personally feel he is slightly overrated. I understand getting to the conference championship is special but it isn't the Super Bowl. At least Jim Kelly, and John Elway got to the Super Bowl multiple times even though in defeat. Dan Marino is the only quarterback that I would categorize as someone who was a premier franchise QB yet not many Super Bowl appearances.
Despite all of that, it is still a mind-blowing trade. I cannot believe the Eagles traded him to a rival and more so the ravenous fans being completely okay with it. I mean this is your rival who you see twice a year and the face of your franchise for the last 10 years will be playing on the other teams. I would be up in arms if this happened with the Packers, but I really think it shows how much the city of Brotherly Love never got behind McNabb.
They never were for his entire career, I mean hell he was booed from the get-go on draft day when the Eagles decided to take McNabb over Ricky Williams (great decision looking back on it today). No matter that he almost always delivered a winner with the Eagles, the fans still found some room in their cold hearts to dislike him after one mistake. The pressure kept building to finally give Kevin Kolb a chance at quarterback and now many Eagles' fans have got their wish. Fans are baseing his success off two 300 yard performances against weak defenses, I think no one has a harder job than him next season. Easily comparable to Aaron Rodgers but I feel it might be harder since he already showed some glimmer of hope in the regular season.
As for the Redskins, I cannot see how this doesn't help them out once they find some wide receivers. Curious question, would the Skins' ask McNabb if they would entertain the possibility of bringing Terrell Owens into D.C.? Hmm.... Very interesting if you ask me. Anyways, he will have a three-headed attack of Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, and Willie Parker in the backfield, which I think is risky but all of those guys have something to prove this season a lot like McNabb. He is working with an offensive mastermind in Mike Shanahan who has made pretty much every quarterback look good and another guy with something to prove in the National Football League.
I still think their offensive line will be the biggest question mark and if they can figure it out after they likely draft Russell Okung in the first round, this team becomes very dangerous. They already have a average to above average defense and now they have an offense to put points up on the board, look out NFC East. Further, I think their division is pretty much wide open, all teams have the same sort of questions marks headed into the draft and it should be an exciting season in the NFC East.
All I know is the McNabb back to Philly is a must-see TV game to see how big of an FU moment it will be for the former superstar. I just think there will be a large chip on McNabb shoulder and he will bring the noise at Lincoln Financial Field. Not to mention, I think this sort of thing amplifies tenfold in football because you only see them once or twice instead of 2 to 4 times in the NBA, or multiple times in baseball.
The one thing I wonder today is will the reaction be the same come late October?

Ramblings From the Wild Card Weekend
Jets 24 Bengals 14
-Joe Theismann is still allowed to be a color guy? My goodness was him, Tom Hammond, and Joe Gibbs just awful. I like Hammond, he does a great job with Notre Dame Football calls but he seemed so uncomfortable with the two former Redskins.
-Darrelle Revis is an absolute monster. I haven't watched that many games of the New York Jets but he is honestly the best cover corner in the league right now, better than Charles Woodson (Chuck does so much more on the field in terms of the run, zone coverage, other stuff). Look at the roll call of the guys he has shut down.
-Mark Sanchez, probably the one guy I am the happiest for because I enjoyed watching him at USC and I think he has the moxy to be a great quarterback. He got a lot of help from the running attack of Shonn Greene (awesome game too) and Thomas Jones.
-The offensive line of the Jets is seriously underrated; the best in the league that I have seen this year and that can propel their chances to continue.
-Carson Palmer, were you alive out there? Theismann could have done a better job out there
Dallas 34 Philadelphia 14
-The Cowboys impressed the most out of anybody this weekend. I thought they played the toughest out of any team and they look dangerous headed into the next few rounds.
-I think the one thing happened to the Eagles and it's simple: People figured out the game plan on DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy isn't doing much as a running back. McNabb just seemed lost out there, which is something we have grown acustomed to in years past.
-There wasn't much that stood out to me, just a dominating performance by Boys'. Like I said, they look damn good.
Baltimore 33 New England 14
-I thought there was no way this would be a blowout either way. I didn't trust the Ravens and I thought before Wes Welker went out with an injury, I thought the Pats were a sneaky Super Bowl pick. Ray Rice opening TD proved me wrong
-The Ravens got lucky that the officiating was so loose, big key for them and if that happens again in Indy look out.
-Ray Rice in my mind is a top ten running back and could be in that top five realm come next year. He has power/speed. Rice could be the difference maker of this playoffs.
- I would like to call this end of the Patriot Dynasty, I think Bill Belichick isn't the same coach he was a couple years ago. I cannot explain it but with the Jets getting better, the Dolphins are still young, and the Bills get the right coach, the AFC East becomes very dangerous.

Wildcard Picks
5. NY Jets at 4. Cincinnati Bengals- I think the Jets are coming into this game way too overconfident with Rex Ryan blabbering about how they are "the best team" and "should be favored." Somebody tell Rex that he has a rookie quarterback who has been know to be unstable in games. I understand why people like the Jets with Darrelle Revis and their rushing attack. I think this is a close game and because of the experience of Carson Palmer will be the difference today. CIN 23-17
6. Philadelphia at 3. Dallas- My dad always told me "Charlie it's tough to beat a team three times." I always remember that when I am watching games or picking games. I really like what the Cowboys are doing in the last couple days and seem to be that team thats getting hot at the right time. Tony Romo has to prove himself in the playoffs now, he did in December but still is unproven in the playoffs. Philadelphia beat teams they were supposed to but played poorly against playoff teams, not a good sign. I think they have the game plan for DeSean Jackson who is their home run hitter on offense. DAL 24-13
6. Baltimore at 3. New England- I don't know what it is about the Ravens but I hate watching them. A lot like Sanchez, I do not trust in Joe Flacco and if the Ravens fall behind early, they have to rely on Flacco. The Patriots although are a completely different team without Wes Welker who is the number one security blanket in the NFL and you have to expect a lot of double teams on Randy Moss. I think their defense will prevail in this game and trust me, this one will be an ugly one. NE 17-9
5. Green Bay at 4. Arizona- The Packers head into a familiar place in the Desert where they have played well in the first two games and Aaron Rodgers seemed very comfortable as well. Basically the same stuff we have been saying about the Packers, need to keep Rodgers protected, get pressure on Kurt Warner, and good secondary play. I think they can do all three and Clay Matthews will be the player of this game, watch out for him. Plus the NFL Network is reporting that Anquan Boldin is out for the game, which is a huge injury. I think the Pack show their teeth in this one. GB 31-20

Week 17 Picks: MIA
I really felt uninspired to write a picks post because honestly most of these games do not matter to teams and they want to lose to get a higher draft pick at least in my opinion. If I am team knowing I will not make the playoffs and I believe my job will be back for next season, everyone gets time oThe other game thff into the next season. Although, I would argue that some coaches and teams would like to play the role of spoliers if they are given the oppertunity.
In the two or three big games this afternoon/night, I think that Philadelphia beats Dallas, it's going to be a close game but the Eagles have had success against the Cowboys in Dallas plus I really do not believe the Cowboys have a cornerback to cover DeSean Jackson, he will have a huge game today. Don't expect a blowout though, Tony Romo will play tough and the Cowboys lose on a final drive. PHI 27-24
The game that seems to be everyone's upset is Oakland and Baltimore, I also like the Raiders in the spolier role because they have risen up to te occasion on more than once against really good teams. I am still not convinced that the Ravens are that good of a team, they are the most undisplinced team in the NFL and Joe Flacco looks average at best. I see it as a defensive struggle with the Mitch Pratts hitting a FG for the win. OAK 13-10
The last game of the day between Cincinnati and the New York Jets could have some importance but if New England were to lose to Houston (currently tied in the third) then the game doesn't matter whatsoever. The Bengals have the tie-breaker and I think they would rather play Denver again then the Jets in back-to-back weeks if they win. The Jets break their fans hearts every year and its going to be freezing in the big city where Mark Sanchez has 1 TD 8 INTs in cold weather this year... not good. CINCY 21-13

NFL Playoffs Predictions and a Super Bowl Winner
NFC: 1. Philadelphia 2. Green Bay 3. New Orleans 4. Seattle 5. New York Giants 6. Minnesota I honestly see that happening with GB/Philly flip-flopping. I cannot see the Saints or the Seahawks pushing for the two top spots. I could see the two wild card poising a threat. The NFC is by far the tougher division this year. There are multiple teams who can be that sixth team as is the same for the division winners.
AFC: 1. San Diego 2 Pittsburgh 3. New England 4. Indianapolis 5. Baltimore 6. Tennessee I think the Chargers has a schedule as easy as Shawne Merriman's girlfriend and they almost have six wins sown up already. Also the Steelers/Ravens get to play those three teams too, trust me its not even fair. The AFC has the better top teams but they have nowhere near the parody.
Wildcard Weekend
(3) New Orleans beats (6) Minnesota- The end of Favre? Who really knows but it would dash the hype of Favre returning to Lambeau for the playoffs. Also Favre's body will be almost a corpse at this point therefore Adrian Peterson will not be able to do it all.
(5) New York Giants over (4) Seattle- I am not that impressed with the Hawks' its don't have a forty-year old running QB. They get a bit of home field advantage with playing far from NYC but the Giants D will be too good.
(3) New England beats (6) Tennessee- The Patriots have always been able to stop the run and that is the one thing the Titans need to win ball games. Also Tennessee doesn't have enough secondary to contain Brady.
(5) Baltimore over (4) Indianapolis- I think the Ravens have a chance to be a very good team this year and the Colts have enough to get them to the playoffs yet not enough to beat a team like Baltimore.
Divisional Round
(1) Philadelphia beats (5) NY Giants- Second straight year, this time at their crib. The Eagles should be able to pressure Eli Manning all day and the offense will have enough to carry them to another NFC Championship visit.
(2) Green Bay over (3) New Orleans- A dome team from the South coming to Lambeau in the dead of winter... rut roh. There is no Mike Vick on the Saints therefore we should win handily in Aaron Rodgers first playoff game.
(5) Baltimore beats (1) San Diego- We will see this game at the same venue and I could see whatever team loses first comes back in the playoffs to win. Anyways, I think the make-up of Baltimore spells disaster for the Chargers.
(2) Pittsburgh over (3) New England- I have trouble taking the Pats farther than this because their defense is a bunch of no-ones plus the Steelers bring back so damn much. Big Ben will prevail in this one.
Championship Games
(2) Green Bay beats (1) Philadelphia- This might be a homer pick but seriously, the Packers are clicking already (its only September!) They can get this done in the house of horrors known as Philly.
(2) Pittsburgh beats (5) Baltimore- Much of the same of last year, the Steelers will out physical the second-best physical team. Hopefully just another huge hit-fest.
Super Bowl
Pittsburgh beats Green Bay- I gotta do it. There is no way I could see the Masters of the 3-4 get outsmarted by the newly 3-4 beasts. I think it would take a big game from Willie Parker though to get it done.
Now on to the picks for both sides.

NFL Preview: NFC North/East
NFC North
1. Green Bay Packers: Key Players- QB Aaron Rodgers, WR Greg Jennings, LB Nick Barnett Key Games-vs./at Chicago (9/13, 12/13) at/vs Minnesota (10/5, 11/1) vs. Dallas (11/15) at Pittsburgh (12/20) at Arizona (1/3) Outlook: I think they win the division with a record of 13-3 or 12-4. They need to stay healthy and if that happens, they will be a dominate force. Charles Woodson/A-Rod are going to have huge years.
2. Minnesota Vikings: Key Players- QB Brett Favre, RB Adrian Peterson DT Kevin Williams Key Games-vs/at Green Bay (10/5, 11/1) vs. Baltimore (10/18) at Pittsburgh (10/25) vs/at Chicago (11/29, 12/28), at Arizona (12/6), vs. New York Giants (01/03) Outlook: They will win one of the Wild Card spots because they do have an easy schedule and I really think if Favre takes a back seat to let Peterson be in control, they can be successful.
3. Chicago Bears: Key Players- QB Jay Cutler, LB Brian Urlacher, RB Matt Forte Key Games- at/vs Green Bay (9/13, 12/13), vs. Pittsburgh (9/20) at Atlanta (10/18) vs. Arizona (11/08), vs. Philadelphia (11/22) at/vs Minnesota (11/29, 12/28) at Baltimore (12/20) Outlook: They could make a push for the Wild Card and I think that Monday Night game against the Vikes may decide it. I think Cutler will have problems with his receivers all year.
4. Detroit Lions: Key Players- QB Matthew Stafford, RB Kevin Smith LB Ernie Sims Key Games- at New Orleans (9/13), vs/at Minnesota (9/20, 11/15) at/vs Green Bay (10/18, 11/26) at/vs Chicago (10/3, 1/3) Outlook: Well I dont believe they will go win less but with a rookie quarterback, I doubt that they win more than four games. Their defense is nothing special at all.
NFC East
1. Philadelphia Eagles: Key Players- QB Donovan McNabb RB Brian Westbrook CB Ashante Samuel Key Games: vs. New Orleans (9/2o) vs/at NY Giants (11/1, 12/13) vs/at Dallas (11/8, 1/3) at San Diego (11/15) at Chicago (11/22) at Atlanta (12/6) Outlook- I dont believe any of the nonsense that McNabb will be bothered by Michael Vick and also look out for RB LeShon McCoy could have a huge year.
2. New York Giants: Key Players- QB Eli Manning, DE Osi Umenyiora, DE Justin Tuck Key Games: at/vs. Dallas (9/20, 12/6) vs. Arizona (10/25) at/vs Philadelphia (11/1, 12/13) vs. San Diego (11/8) vs. Atlanta (11/22) at Minnesota (1/3) Outlook- The other Wild Card team, they have the best D-Line in the NFL right now and I think Manning will be fine without Plaxico Burress.
3. Dallas Cowboys: Key Players- QB Tony Romo, RB Marion Barber/Felix Jones OLB DeMarcus Ware Key Games: vs./at NY Giants (9/20, 12/6) vs. Atlanta (10/25) at/vs Philadelphia (11/8, 1/3) at Green Bay (11/15) vs. San Diego (12/13) at New Orleans (12/19) Outlook- Could be the end of the road for Wade Phillips, I dont see this team better than third with a tough as nails schedule and a lot of question marks all around.
4. Washington Redskins: Key Players- DT Albert Hanyesworth, S LaRon Landry, RB Clinton Portis Key Games- at/vs NY Giants (9/13, 12/21) vs/at Philadelphia (10/26, 11/29) at/vs Dallas (11/22, 12/27) Outlook- Some people feel the Skins may be the surprise team of the NFC with their defense but I have a hard time seeing their offense being able to compete with the competition in this division.
On to the NFC South/West

Vick Lands in Philly
Most of you are probably think that the Eagles were in the same position as the Green Bay Packers who showed some interest in Vick a couple weeks ago. The reason being is both teams have quality quarterbacks who are more than capable to lead their team to the NFC Playoffs. The one factor with Philly is Donovan McNabb hasnt always been Mr. Relieble when it comes to injuries and the fans of Philadelphia seem to have hate for McNabb to the levels of former Milwaukee Brewer Bill Hall (I kid). Whenever shit hits the fans for the Eagles, its never head coach Andy Reid's fault: It's all on DNabb's shoulders. I think Philadelphia wants to have a quality back up for McNabb if he gets hurt or just falls apart during the year.
The other big reason any team would be lucky to have Mike Vick is the Wildcat formation. You gotta believe the Eagles' coaching staff was implementing this system in the last couple of weeks to get their lineman and others ready for the package. I mean just imagine Vick back there with Brian Westbrook or LeSean McCoy that is very hard to stop. Consequently, what if they put Vick and McNabb back there at the same time? Wow you wouldnt be able to stop that even if you planned for it.
My final big reason is the Eagles just got the #1 trade bait for the upcoming year. Even though McNabb isnt getting any younger, I highly doubt he will be dealt for Vick unless something happens in-season. If Vick keeps his head on straight and has a good year doing the situational quarterback stuff; teams without good quarterbacks will chop at the bit for Vick. I am talking about Philadelphia getting a couple good draft picks for him and honestly that is what I think the Eagles' plan train of thought.

NFC-AFC Championship Recap
Well the day is done and we are down to two teams in the National Football League. A day that I thought would be very boring turned out to be rather exciting. I will break all down for you guys starting now...
Arizona 32 Philadelphia 25- For the first time in history, the Arizona Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl. The 2008-2009 sports season has already been filled with unpredictability and now add the Cardinals to the list.
This was a great game for the fans of teams not named the Eagles or the Cardinals, it had its ups and downs and alot of hair-pulling moments. The Cardinals had led 24-6 at halftime and I thought I would have a couple hours to watch 24, not so fast my friend. Donovan McNabb willed his team back from the grave finding his tight end Brent Celek for two big touchdowns. Then McNabb found DeSean Jackson deep for the go-ahead touchdown. The Cardinals showed poise as they brought the ball down the field including a clutch fourth and inches. Then they scored on a Tim Hightower screen pass from Kurt Warner on third goal. On the final drive, the Cardinals beared down as they stopped McNabb on a fourth down and many Philly fans will complain about non-pass interference call on Rodrick Hood on the final play. I think because Kevin Curtis had a chance to make the play afterwards, there was no need to make the call.
Kurt Warner who in my opinion is a Hall of Famer once again had a huge game throwing four touchdowns, no interceptions and only missing seven passes. Larry Fitzgerald is playing like the best wide receiver in football right now. I would compare his playoff performance with B.J. Upton of the Tampa Bay Rays. Fitz had an alright regular season but had a huge playoff season. I mean everyone was talking about the performance Anquan Boldin all year but now its all about Fitzgerald. The Eagles are now 1-4 in NFC Championship games under Andy Reid so basically they are the Bills of championship games. Brian Westbrook proved to be a non-factor again and McNabb performance especially in the second half was amazing. He threw for 375 yards with three touchdowns, and one interception. McNabb did everything he could but it wasnt enough as the corners for Philadelphia couldnt stop Fitzgerald or Boldin which brings up another point why wouldnt the blitz specialist Jim Johnson keep doing it when Warner was burning them consistently on the man-to-man coverage.
Pittsburgh 23 Baltimore 14- Many are saying this was one of the hardest hitting games ever witnessed and I would agree. This would be the perfect song on how to describe this game. So many guys got jacked up and the emotions were so high. Despite my bashing of the Steelers week in week out for their continuous coverage, they were the most consistent team in football.
The Steelers put up the first six points on the board with two field goals from this guy... yes this guy, I wonder whats his pickup line with girls? Then on a third and nine, Ben Roethlisberger scrambled out of the pocket which was the biggest thing he did all game; found Santonio Holmes for a long touchdown with some great down field blocking. The Ravens struck back with a goal line touchdown from Wills McGahee set up by Wisconsin own Jim Leonhard long punt return. The Steelers got another field goal by spiked one and then McGahee punched another teeder to make it 16-14. Then Troy Polamalu took back an interception to put the icing on the AFC Championship cake.
The hardest thing about the Steelers defense is the fact that no one can run the football on them. The Ravens had ran the ball more than anyone else in the NFL and they couldnt do shit against Steelers forcing Joe Flacco to pass the ball more than he had all throughout the playoffs. Speaking of Flacco, he looked like a rookie today. Flacco went 13/30, only 140 yards and three interceptions. I have enjoyed watching Ed Reed throughout the playoffs and he is a great player, probably the most dangerous playing after an interception BUT... Troy Polamalu is the best safety in the leauge. He makes so many plays to stop the run, creating deflections, or taking on back to the house as stated before.
The Ravens defense didnt look as strong as they did the last two games because of so many injuries. Terrell Suggs was not the same player he was with his banged-up shoulder and they lost Samari Rolle from the last game against Tennesse. Then all the other cornerbacks seemed to get hurt in the game today. The Ravens offense will be strong in the upcoming years but the question will be how much of their defense comes back? Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Terrell Suggs are all free agents next year which I think both Reed and Lewis are back but Suggs will move on.
I will give a Pittsburgh-Arizona next week because we still have two weeks before the game even is played..
-Charlie.

NFL Divisional Picks
Saturday
Baltimore at Tennessee- Some are calling this game boring and yes, it will probably have its moments although this will be one of the hardest hitting games you will ever see. The Titans are going to be ready to play this game, they havent played in a couple of weeks and the big key is Albert Hanyesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch are both back from injury. They need Kerry Collins to have a decent game to let the run develop. The Ravens defense is really tough right now and no one is playing better than Ed Reed is right now. Although when it all boils down to it, Joe Flacco is a rookie quarterback and I just dont see him able to carry his team. TENN 17-13
Arizona at Carolina- Everyone is saying that this game will be a complete blowout by the Carolina Panthers. You gotta believe that the Cards are using that as motivation all week to get their guys up for this playoff game. Kurt Warner still has it in him to lead this guys to victory and I think they can if they can stop the run like they did last weekend. But if the Panthers score two quick touchdowns or any early turnovers it could be a long game for Arizona. I will do a Lee Corso, "Closer than the experts think!" CAR 28-24
Sunday
Philadelphia at New York Giants- The big NFC East rematch, I think its crazy that there are people still doubting the Giants after all they have done this year so far. Also I think people are riding the jocks of Phillie a little too hard. Brian Westbrook had a huge game last year in the Meadowlands and for them to win, they need that out of him again. Eli Manning does need another reciever to step up for them to replace Swiss Plax because they hasnt happen yet. I will take the Giants in an ugly one. NYG 20-13
San Diego at Pittsburgh- Great stat for all you fans out there. San Diego is 0-13 against Pittsburgh in the regular season but the Chargers are 2-0 against the Steelers in the playoffs. I remember in 1995, no one thought that Stan Humpheries could beat the Steelers at Three Rivers and they did. Anyways, Darren Sproles is a perfect Ewing Theory candidate and I really think the Steelers havent seen a player like that this year. The big question is the Chargers defense shut down the Colts last weekend and what makes you think they cant do again with a lesser offense? I am taking the Chargers in an upset and will amaze myself on how Norv Turner wins playoff games with San Diego. SD 24-13
-Charlie.

Benching McNabb Isnt the Answer
Lets get on with the article, if you didnt catch it the Eagles decided yesterday to bench Donovan McNabb at halftime and now is back as a starter for Thursday night battle with the Arizona Cardinals. Andy Reid said today "Sometimes you need to take a step back, to take a step forward." But see what Reid doesnt realize is its his play calling that is costing his team victories in the past couple weeks. I am not saying that Reid deserves to get fired but his seat should definitely be getting warm as five times in the last couple games he has passed on 3rd and 1! You have Brian Westbrook whose arguably one of the best backs in the league and you pass on short yardage?! I just dont get it.
Also I have never been a fan of McNabb but I think when he was at his premier best was when he had a good receiving core which was only for a mere three years then when Terell Owens left so did McNabb's career. I know thats a hard pill to swallow for some of you who might hate T.O. but its the absolute truth. He never has a top-flight reciever to throw the ball and in my opinion thats what he needs to be ultimately successful. He isnt up there with the Mannings, Favres, and Bradys of the world for that exact reason.
Now the best question is will Donovon McNabb show up on Thursday?
-Charlie.
