TWTW: Sanchez Takes New York

One of the more interesting subplot of the week was the fact that rookie quarterback from USC who only played sixteen games in college got the starting job with the New York Jets this past week. I think this is a good idea but there are a couple things that have to happen.
1. The Joe Flacco Effect: I think the Jets have one of the most underrated defenses in the league with guys like Kris Jenkins, David Harris, Kerry Rhodes, and Derrelle Revis just to name a few. They can make things happen and if they force enough turnovers where Sanchez would then have a chance to become anywhere from a 7-9 to 9-7 team. Now if a couple of those guys go down then the Jets are going to be drafting in the top ten again without trading up for it this time.

2. Ignore the NYC Media There will be a time in the season where shit hits the complete fan with Sanchez and the New York Post with others are going to tear this guy apart. Granted, he is the perfect type of guy to lead a New York team giving them a sort of "swagger. I feel that comes from being coached by Pete Carroll and USC Football in general. I find hard to believe that Sanchez will wilt under pressure of the media. This also goes for Rex Ryan who may be the biggest hardass in the NFL right now. He has made his bed with Sanchez and now he has to live with it for the year. I am dead serious too because if one thing to screw up Sanchez would be to take away his starting job past the eight game of the year.

3. Running is #1 Option You cannot expect Sanchez to be the key to your offense. That will lead to bad things. Some might say that Thomas Jones only had a big year because of Brett Favre but I beg to differ. Jones is one of the most underrated running backs in the game today. In addition, they have Leon Washington whose an explosive threat and Shonn Greene who can give you the "tough yards".

The Jets Are Screwed for 2009

I understand that I am behind on things here at Chucks Corner but I have been ultra busy plus I am starting to get sick so the motivation is not always there. Like I said yesterday I hope to be caught up tomorrow.

Now I think the most interesting thing about the draft was the Matt Sanchez deal. Some people absolutely love the move seeing it as a Joe Flacco-like move for the Jets who are really just a quarterback shy of being a playoff team. Others like my buddy Steve, an avid Jets fan sent me a text saying "Ruined my day." I think I am going to join Steve on this one despite my USC-bias and the fact that I like Sanchez.

First of all, they gave up their first rounder for next year so if they have an awful year (you never know in the NFL) the Browns will be sitting pretty for next year. The other thing that concerns me is Sanchez has only played 16 games of college football and in that time hasnt won a National Championship. If the Jets play this right way, they let Sanchez sit on the bench the whole year to get him experienced in the NFL game.

See this will not happen because the Jets saw what the Falcons did with Matt Ryan who by the way was a senior and I believe a three-year starter for the Eagles or Flacco with the Ravens where he had the best defense in the NFL. The Jets have a good defense, an veteran offensive line, and a pretty solid running game amplified with the Jets picking up Shonn Greene.

If the Jets are a "run-first" mentality team and Sanchez only has to make the key passes like Flacco did, they might be a playoff team. You have to remember the AFC East is a very tough division and Sanchez also hasnt adapted to playing cold weather. He has no idea what a December game in the Medowlands feels like or worse up in Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Needless to say, it might be a long year for the Jets.
