Honestly I Didn't Have a Title (Tried One and It Sucked)

Many people around the state of Wisconsin are upset over the Marquette Golden Eagles deciding to cut D.J. Newbill, an incoming recruit loose after Jamil Wilson, the once top 50 recruit out of Racine, Wisconsin was available. Wilson is now a Golden Eagle and will make a very formidable squad in 2011-2012, yet people are being the ethics police here in southeast Wisconsin.

Don't get me wrong, I feel terrible for Newbill.  He seemed like he had a great desire to play for Buzz Williams and wanted to at all costs. There were reports that Newbill was fine with sitting on the bench and watch the games as the 12th man.  But Marquette claimed that paperwork was wrong and they had to cut a character guy off their team.  Sad stuff, but to be honest this is sport is a business and anyone who doesn't think that way still remembers watching Jimmy Chitwood.

The reason why I think it has caught so much heat is the other Division 1 program in Madison is cleaner than prude virgin.  Their football team might be another story, but basketball keeps a reputation of bringing in their type of players plus never doing it the wrong way.  I would consider 85% of the NCAA to have more of business-like approach than thinking about the kids first.  I do think Wisconsin is in the minority, which I give them a lot of credit.  But do not think everyone is like you.

I heard someone compared Williams to John Calipari/Nick Saban which is ridiculous.  Those two guys have built a reputation of making  multiple controversial decisions and doing things that are downright wrong. Tell me another time that Williams has taken away a scholarship from a player?  Sure, there are the 'BuzzCuts' as my buddy Ron calls them, but seriously look at any university... you have guys who want to transfer for a variety of reasons.  Tell me one player who came out afterwards saying he didn't want to leave?  None of them. We never know what happens behind the scenes therefore our ideas could be entirely different than what actually happened.

Williams isn't a dirty coach nor should ever be considered  for one possible poor decision. People hate the NCAA because they claim they do not care about the students and why then when something like this happens, people make such a big deal?  Doesn't make sense to me.

You might want to try "proofreading" your blog posts before you press "Publish". This was the most awful sports article I think I have ever read.

Regarding Newbill, which side of the mouth are you talking out of? You say you "feel terrible for he kid", but follow that with, "sad stuff, but to be honest this is sport is a business". (you're typo, not mine) Ohhhh kay.

Really? Is that why the NCAA is constantly fining schools for not meeting academic criteria and why the players DO NOT GET PAID?

This is college athletics, but you act as if people are crying foul over a millionaire pro athlete getting shrifted- dude, the kid is 18 frickin' years old.

I guess we should all be so lucky to get introduced to the world of half-truths and forked tongues at an early age....

PS: The expression is "PAINT INTO a corner"- as in "Don't Paint Williams into a Corner".

PPS: You should be ashamed for trying to cover Buzz' tracks on this.

Bo ran off Ian Markolf when Brust became available. And has tried to get Gavinski to leave (how else do you explain leaving him home, but taking the walk-ons to Purdue?).

UW isn't above reproach here, either.

It's unfortunate, but stuff like this happens in big time CBB.

Milwaukee Sports Fan is an English teacher I am assuming? I fixed some things, I never made that phantom typo you speak of.

Thank for you the caps, but they probably should get paid with the way things are going.

Dan, excellent agruments the other way. Thank you.

They're actually terrible arguments the other way. Bo never pulled a scholarship from a kid as Buzz Williams did, if that was the case and if Bo operated that way, I GUARANTEE Gavinski would no longer be playing basketball at Wisconsin anymore.

Brust was a player that became available after Markolf, on his own, decided to leave the program. And Markolf left because he no longer desired to play basketball, which is why he is still attending UW and didn't transfer elsewhere (the same can't be said about Newbill who is essentially screwed at this point).

Sending a message to somebody for not practicing and playing well is far, far different from sending a kid packing altogether. The fact of the matter is that Buzz Williams did something completely shady and Marquette fans can't live with it being rightfully criticized.

rumor has it that Newbill was already planning on going to a prep school and he didnt have his paperwork in, if that is truly the case, this isnt nearly as big of a deal as people are making it, but that is if the rumor is true...

You can criticize but did you ever think maybe Buzz laid it out for him that he would never be a starter at Marquette with the way things were going?

I realize it was his dream to play at Marquette but maybe Newbill believed he could start elsewhere so Buzz worked out a loophole for him.

You will tell me my head is in the sand but it's just a thought.

This is my favorite- "And Markolf left because he no longer desired to play basketball"

Right. After a long retreat at a cabin on the shores of Lake Mendota, Markolf questioned his desire to continue playing basketball.

Couldn't be because he wasn't playing and didn't travel. And it certainly couldn't have come at the suggestion of St. Bo Ryan.
